Vigevano

An hour’s ride southwest of Milan, Vigevano keeps one of the Italian Renaissance’s purest urban gestures: Piazza Ducale, built in record time for Ludovico Sforza as a noble forecourt to one of Europe’s largest castles. Around it lies a city of ducal farms, water mills and shoemaking workshops — the former capital of Italian footwear.

Inside, a cluster of museums ranges from the works of Leonardo’s circle to a shoe museum displaying the 1495 chopine of Beatrice d’Este. What lifts Vigevano beyond a single great square is the countryside it engineered: the Sforzesca model farmstead built for Beatrice d’Este, and medieval water mills still turning on the canal edges, all inside the Ticino park’s UNESCO biosphere landscape. Character and history

The city grew in a spiral around its castle, first documented in 963, later held under Pavia’s influence and elevated to a city by the last Sforza duke in 1532. Its golden moment came with Ludovico il Moro, who demolished the old communal palace to make room for his piazza, rebuilt the castle, and hosted guests of the calibre of Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante. The cathedral of Sant’Ambrogio, begun in 1532 under Francesco II Sforza from designs by Antonio da Lonate, closes the square with its concave baroque facade, added in the seventeenth century. Industry succeeded art as Vigevano’s signature: silk and cotton gave way to shoemaking, which boomed during the First World War until, by the 1950s, the city was known as Italy’s shoe capital — a heritage the civic museums now curate rather than a trade the town still lives by. In town, the Church of San Pietro Martire (San Cristoforo) and the Palazzo Merula (Municipal Historical Archive) reward a slower walk, while the Moro Mill (Mora Bassa) turns its water wheels just outside the centre and the Sforzesca Farmstead with the Colombarone stands in the fields beyond.
