Less polished than Sorrento and quieter than Positano, it rewards travellers who want genuine Campanian daily life, Gothic stonework and long sea horizons within an easy train ride of everything.

Most visitors rush through Vico Equense on the Circumvesuviana train between Naples and Sorrento, which is precisely why the town keeps its composure. Stop here and you find a compact historic centre perched on tufa cliffs, a former cathedral that is the only Gothic church of its kind on the Sorrentine Coast, and a mountain — Monte Faito — rising behind the rooftops with beech woods and viewing terraces over two gulfs. The local tourism office promotes a programme of guided heritage tours, open-air art and themed museums that give the town an intellectual life unusual for a seaside resort. Add a cheesemaking tradition recognised by the municipality, a food scene taken seriously by Neapolitans, and coastal hamlets such as Le Marine and Banco di Santa Croce, and you have a base that balances culture, coastline and calm.

Character and history

Vico Equense’s position made it strategically valuable long before tourism: it guards the neck of the Sorrentine Peninsula, where the Lattari mountains narrow the land between the Gulf of Naples and the Amalfi side. Medieval sources recall it as the seat of a small duchy that maintained a notable degree of autonomy, and from 1320–1330 it became the cathedral town of its own diocese, when Bishop Giovanni Cimmino moved the episcopal seat from the shore at Marina d’Equa to the newly built church of the Santissima Annunziata. That episcopal past still shapes the centre: the old seminary, the former cathedral and the bishops’ line painted in its sacristy speak of a town once far more important than its size suggests. In later centuries noble families — among them the Giusso, who gave their name to the castle — left palazzi and gardens behind. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries brought the grand hotels and the seaside districts below the cliff, and today Vico Equense wears its history lightly, a working town that happens to be beautifully placed.

What to see

Start at the Church of the Santissima Annunziata (former Vico Equense Cathedral) on Via Vescovado, its roofless-bell outline and 18th-century façade framed by one of the best sea views in town. Inside, look for the tomb of jurist Gaetano Filangieri and the sacristy frescoes of the bishops of Equense, where a small angel gestures for silence in place of Bishop Michele Natale, hanged in 1799 for supporting the Parthenopean Republic.

Nearby, Giusso Castle occupies the cliff edge; the medieval stronghold later became the home of a celebrated hospitality school, and its terraces host lectures for the Capo d’Orlando Prize, which has drawn Nobel laureates to town since 2003. A short walk uphill, the Campanian Mineralogical Museum inside the Monumental Complex of the Santissima Trinita e Paradiso holds some 5,000 minerals, Vesuvian specimens, fossils and meteorites — one of the leading science museums in the region. Culture continues at the Museum of Sacred Art and Convent of San Vito, the Antonio Asturi Open-Air Museum spread through the lanes, and the quirky Museum of Cinema of the Sorrentine Peninsula, devoted to films shot along the coast. When the city feels small, ride or drive up to Monte Faito, the Lattari summit above town.

Begin with coffee in the evening passeggiata streets around Piazza Umberto, then follow the lanes to the Annunziata’s belvedere at golden hour. Book the local guided tour circuit — the town’s tourism service runs themed walks led by residents, and the “13 Porte” project links thirteen historic churches and hamlets on foot. Food is the other great itinerary: the municipality protects its own pizza style and cheesemaking tradition with De.Co. denominations, so seek out a tasting of provolone del Monaco and the local pizza in a dairy or trattoria rather than a seafront menu. On clear days, take the road up through the Bosco woods to Monte Faito for walks among beeches and views that stretch from the Bay of Naples towards the Amalfi side; the cableway from Castellammare di Stabia is an alternative ascent. Swim from the rocky coves below the cliffs, and use the Circumvesuviana to reach Sorrento, Pompeii or Naples without a car.

Vico Equense sits on the Sorrento branch of the Circumvesuviana railway, roughly an hour from Napoli Centrale and under fifteen minutes from Sorrento; the station is at the top of the town, with stairs and lifts down to the centre. Buses connect the coastal hamlets and the road up Monte Faito in season — check schedules locally, as mountain services thin out outside summer. The peninsula makes lateral trips effortless. Sorrento is one train stop away and the obvious springboard for Capri ferries; quieter Massa Lubrense and hilltop Sant’Agata sui Due Golfi lead towards wilder coves and olive terraces, while Piano di Sorrento continues the string of cliff towns north towards Meta. Inland and eastwards, the motorway at Castellammare di Stabia puts Pompeii and Vesuvius within a half-day loop.
