Spilimbergo

Character and history

The castle gave the town its masters and its name. The Spengenberg family, nobles of Carinthian origin, served the Patriarchate of Aquileia as ministeriales from their fortress above the river; the darkest of their stories came in 1350, when feudatories riding out from the castle killed Patriarch Bertrando di San Genesio on the Richinvelda plain — an event so shocking that locals were nicknamed “beltramini” ever after. The castle complex grew into a ring of residences around a courtyard: Palazzo Tadea of 1566, Palazzo Troilo frescoed in 1544 and later used as the town jail, and the Palazzo Dipinto, rebuilt at the end of the Trecento, whose painted facade welcomed Emperor Charles V in 1532 and Henry III of France in 1574. An earthquake and the fire of 1511 destroyed the south wing forever, and later centuries softened the defences; today the complex stands half-girt by moat, half-suspended over the Tagliamento’s gravel banks. The duomo had risen meanwhile — begun in 1284 and finished around 1420, with seven rose windows on its west front, a feature unique in Friuli — and survived the 1976 earthquake that devastated the region. In 1922 the mosaic school opened, turning post-earthquake craft training into an international calling.
