Siena

0 private tours·30 attractions

The Gothic heart of Tuscany, Siena is a medieval republic preserved in brick: a shell-shaped campo where the city races its Palio, a striped marble cathedral, civic frescoes that invented political art. Seventeen contrade divide its lanes, its banks were Europe’s first, and its hills roll out towards the Crete.

Why visit

Siena is the rare great city that still behaves like a medieval commune. Its centre — a UNESCO World Heritage site of brick palaces and curved rooftops — is organised not by streets but by contrade, the seventeen district-communities whose flags fly from every window and whose rivalry erupts twice each summer in the Palio, the bareback horse race run around the Piazza del Campo. That sloping shell of pavement, ringed by palazzi and dominated by the civic tower, remains the most complete medieval public square in Italy and the stage on which the city acts out its identity.

Art gives Siena its second claim. The Sienese school — Duccio, Simone Martini, the Lorenzetti brothers — painted the altarpieces and civic allegories that made this city, alongside Florence, a furnace of the early Renaissance, and its greatest works remain here: in the cathedral complex, in the civic palace, in the national picture gallery. Add a noble hospital turned museum, a Jewish quarter with a functioning synagogue, a Franciscan basilica rising over the rooftops, and walks that follow the pilgrim road through the gates, and the case for two or three unhurried days becomes obvious.

Character and history

Siena’s medieval greatness was built on banking and the pilgrim road. Astride the Via Francigena on its way to Rome, the city minted money, lent to half of Europe, and fought its great neighbour Florence to a standstill at Montaperti in 1260. Its government — the Nine — erected the Palazzo Pubblico (Siena Town Hall) and the Torre del Mangia as the architectural manifesto of good civic order; inside, the frescoes of the Sienese school, including Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s Allegory of Good Government, made the argument in paint that a republic could be an earthly paradise.

The plague of 1348, which killed perhaps half the city, ended Siena’s golden age — and thereby preserved it. The unfinished cathedral nave, abandoned mid-expansion, is the most poignant monument to that rupture; the striped marble of the Duomo, its inlaid floor, and the palaces along the Banchi di Sotto record what ambition achieved. Absorbed into the Medici grand duchy in the sixteenth century, the city turned inward, keeping its contrade, its feast days and its dialect of brick and travertine alive until modern tourism arrived to find them intact.

What to see

The Campo and its tower come first. From the piazza, the climb up the Torre del Mangia — about four hundred steps, timed entries — rewards with the city’s defining view; at its foot, the Siena Civic Museum fills the state rooms of the palace, and the slender Chapel of the Piazza (Cappella di Piazza) stands where the tower meets the square.

Across the ridge stands the cathedral ensemble, best seen with its combined pass. The Siena Cathedral itself is a black-and-white marble wonder with a mosaic floor of astonishing complexity; the Piccolomini Library blazes with Pinturicchio’s frescoes; the Facciatone Panoramic Viewpoint lets you stand on the unfinished nave’s façade; the Crypt of Siena Cathedral hides vivid thirteenth-century frescoes; and the Baptistery of St John the Baptist keeps its sculptural treasures below the choir. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo preserves Duccio’s Maestà, the altarpiece that crowned the cathedral’s altar.

Beyond the Duomo, the city rewards wandering: the Santa Maria della Scala Museum Complex, the medieval hospital facing the cathedral, now a labyrinth of pilgrim halls, and beneath it the National Archaeological Museum of Siena; the National Pinacoteca of Siena in two noble palaces, the definitive collection of Sienese painting; the austere Basilica of San Domenico, guardian of Catherine of Siena’s relics; the Basilica of San Francesco and the terrace-vantage Basilica of Santa Maria dei Servi above their valleys. Devotees of the city’s saint visit the Sanctuary of the House of St Catherine, while the Siena Synagogue and Jewish Museum opens the history of the quarter near the Piazza del Campo’s flank.

Finish with the civic fabric: the Porta Camollia facing Florence, the Fontebranda Fountain of the Oca contrada, the Medici Fortress now a public park, the palazzo-lined State Archive of Siena, Palazzo Sansedoni on the Campo, the contemporary exhibitions of Palazzo delle Papesse, the botany of the Botanical Garden of the University of Siena and the cabinets of the Natural History Museum of the Accademia dei Fisiocritici. The Church of San Giorgio, the Templar-linked Church of la Magione and the marked Siena Urban Section of the Via Francigena stitch the story together.

How to experience

Walk the contrade. Between the Campo and the Duomo, look for each district’s fountain, flags and museum; residents will explain a rivalry that dates to the Middle Ages. If possible, be in Siena for the Palio on 2 July or 16 August: even outside the ticketed terraces, the day — trial races, costumed processions, the tufo track laid across the piazza — is unforgettable, and the districts’ street dinners beforehand are the city at its warmest.

Climb something each day: the Torre del Mangia in the morning, the Facciatone at golden hour. Eat Sienese — pici with ragù, ribollita, panforte and ricciarelli with a glass of Chianti Colli Senesi — and shop along Banchi di Sotto. Beyond the walls, the Crete Senesi begin almost at the gate; Linger in the evening light, and remember that the city’s texture is the point.

Practical planning

Siena sits about an hour south of Florence; trains arrive at a station below the hill, linked by escalators, while frequent buses stop closer to the centre. Cars stay outside the walls — the centre is a restricted zone — with garages near the stadium, the Santa Caterina car park to the west and Il Campo lot to the south. Everything inside the walls is walkable, on brick lanes that turn steep and slick in rain.

Major sites keep seasonal schedules: the Duomo complex sells a combined pass covering cathedral, museum, panoramic terrace, crypt and baptistery, with the celebrated floor fully visible only in the uncovered periods of summer and autumn; the Civic Museum and Tower have their own timed entries and quota limits. Reserve Palio terraces early; the trials and the race day itself repay the effort. May, June, September and October bring the best light; allow two full days at least.
