Salento

1 private tour·11 attractions

The Salento is Italy’s instep: a peninsula of sun-bleached limestone where Greek and Latin rites once ran side by side, megalithic menhirs stand in olive fields, baroque towns glow gold at dusk, and two seas meet at the cape. This corner gathers Bronze Age ports, thermal grottoes and rock-cut villages into one of southern Europe’s most layered landscapes.

Why visit

Travel here and you cross millennia in a morning. You can swim into a karst cave whose walls carry hundreds of Messapian votive inscriptions, stand before menhirs raised long before Rome existed, tour a fifteenth-century ducal palace attributed by local tradition to a Medici-court architect, and bathe in sulphurous thermal waters that rise inside the cliff itself. The Salento packs prehistory, classical antiquity, Byzantine spirituality and baroque exuberance within a short radius — and wraps it all in the food, wine and pizzica rhythms of the deep south.

Character and history

The Salento’s identity was forged at the meeting point of the Mediterranean’s two worlds. Its ports traded with Minoan and Mycenaean Crete; the Messapian people left their language carved into cave walls and their megaliths standing in the fields; Byzantine monks hollowed crypts from the rock; and the later feudal lords — Del Balzo, Gonzaga and others — built the palazzi and collegiate churches that anchor the towns. Greek-rite worship survived here for centuries alongside the Latin church, and the dialect, cuisine and even the roofing stones of the old towns still carry that double inheritance.

Under the modern surface, the same continuity holds: the province’s scholar Cosimo De Giorgi catalogued the standing stones in the nineteenth century, the archaeological service excavated the Bronze Age citadel at Roca in living memory, and the thermal establishment at Santa Cesarea Terme still draws on the same grottoes that impressed travellers a century ago.

What to see

On the Adriatic coast, the Roca Vecchia Archaeological Area and Grotta della Poesia is the essential site: a fortified settlement from the seventeenth century BC with Mycenaean ties, a Messapian town of the fourth and third centuries BC behind walls roughly 1,400 metres long, a medieval refoundation under Gualtieri VI of Brienne — and below it all, the two-lobed cave of the Poesia, its smaller chamber preserving hundreds of votive inscriptions in Messapian, Greek and Latin. Inland, the Menhirs of Melpignano stand freely accessible across the territory: six named stones, from the squared 280-centimetre Minonna on Via IV Novembre to the pyramidal Candelora, monuments whose original meaning remains open to study.

At Santa Cesarea Terme the eccentric seaside villas culminate in Villa Sticchi, an exotic Moorish-eclectic fantasy on the cliff line, while beneath the town the Grotta Fetida (Santa Cesarea Thermal Baths) opens among four grottoes of sulphurous, saline-bromoiodic waters rising at around thirty degrees, visitable on guided tours in the warm months. Farther south, Alessano rewards a stop: the Ducal Palace of Alessano, a late-fifteenth-century fortified residence whose elegant windows are traditionally attributed to Giuliano da Maiano and whose capitals bear the sixteen-pointed star of the Del Balzo; the Collegiate Church of San Salvatore (Alessano); the Palazzo Sangiovanni (Palace of the Zigzag Diamonds) and Palazzo Legari in the old quarter; the Church and Convent of the Capuchin Friars; and, on the road to the coast, the Byzantine Macurano Rock Settlement, a rupestrian village with its masseria and underground mills, beside the small Church of Sant’Antonio.

How to experience

The Salento is a driving landscape — a slow one. Thread the country roads between masserie and dry-stone walls, stop at a menhir simply because the sign says so, and swim where the locals do in the afternoons. Time your days around food: rustico and salvatore at a bar, pitta di patate in a village trattoria, Negroamaro from the surrounding vineyards. Summer evenings bring pizzica dancing in the piazze; spring and autumn are made for the archaeological sites without the heat. For current arrangements — Roca’s ticketing, the thermal cave tours, monument openings — rely on the official operators’ pages, as schedules shift with the season.

Practical planning

Lecce is the gateway, with trains from Bari and Rome; beyond the city you need a car or patient use of the provincial bus lines. Distances are short — Roca Vecchia sits about half an hour from Lecce — but roads are narrow and August traffic is real. The coast south of Santa Cesarea is rocky and dramatic rather than sandy; bring water shoes. Roca Vecchia’s bathing area has managed access with daily caps in summer, so arrive early or book. Check the site’s official channel for hours before setting out, as they change monthly through the season.

Nearby places

Base yourself easily between Otranto and Gallipoli, the two historic ports on either side of the peninsula, push on to the Cape at Santa Maria di Leuca, and explore the baroque villages of Specchia and Presicce inland — all within an hour’s radius.
