A composed, prosperous city on the Roman Via Emilia, Parma pairs one of Italy’s great art complexes with a musical pedigree running from Toscanini to Verdi, then tops it all with the most famous food name in the world. It is a place that takes quality quietly seriously, and travellers are welcome at the table.

Parma rewards the unhurried traveller with an unusual triple offering. Art lovers get the Pilotta, a vast Farnese palace complex holding a theatre, a picture gallery, an archaeology museum and a library under one roof. Music lovers get a working opera house and the birthplace of Arturo Toscanini. Eaters get the capital of what the city’s own tourism board calls Italy’s Food Valley, a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy surrounded by the dairy country of Parmigiano Reggiano and the curing cellars of prosciutto, culatello and coppa. Few cities of this size carry such weight in three separate worlds, and the atmosphere remains relaxed rather than monumental: cycling students, aperitivo crowds and market stalls share the same lanes as the ducal heritage, and nothing feels staged for visitors. Character and history

Founded as a Roman colony on the Via Emilia, Parma rose to real prominence under the Farnese dukes, who from 1545 ruled the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza and turned the city into a court capital with a taste for grandeur. They began the enormous Palazzo della Pilotta, and inside it the Farnese Theatre, a near-entirely wooden baroque auditorium built in 1618, whose scale still astonishes despite wartime damage and careful restoration. Later came Marie Louise of Austria, Napoleon’s Habsburg duchess, whose collections and civic reforms shaped the city’s museums, a story told in detail at the Glauco Lombardi Museum. The ducal era also left green lungs: the Ducal Park, begun as a French-style garden and later softened into an English landscape, remains the city’s favourite stroll, while the star-shaped Cittadella Park-Fortress recalls military ambitions on the western edge. Music ran through all of it: the city that taught the world to revere Verdi produced Toscanini a generation later, and both names are still spoken with something close to family pride.

The Palazzo della Pilotta anchors the visit, its enormous unfinished shell still defining the east side of the centre. Within it, the National Gallery of Parma hangs works by Parmigianino and other masters of the local school, while the Palatina Library preserves the world of the great typographer Giambattista Bodoni next door at the Bodoni Museum; the National Archaeological Museum of Parma completes the circuit, and the perfumed Ancient Pharmacy of San Giovanni adds a curiosity nearby. Across town, Piazza Duomo gathers the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta with Correggio’s illusionistic dome, the pink-marble octagon of the Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista carved by Benedetto Antelami, and the Benedetto Antelami Diocesan Museum. Music heritage lives at the Teatro Regio of Parma, home of the annual Festival Verdi, and at the Arturo Toscanini Birthplace Museum in the narrow lanes near the river; the Basilica of Santa Maria della Steccata and the Camera of Saint Paul, with its Correggio ceiling, fill out the artistic picture.

How to experience

Give the Pilotta a full morning; the buildings are deliberately vast and the rooms unfold slowly. The tourism board sells combined visiting passes for the Duomo square complex, and the Pilotta institutions share their own ticketing, so plan the two clusters as separate outings. Between museums, eat deliberately: book a tasting at a caseificio in the surrounding countryside, follow the “Parma Widespread Museum of Taste” itineraries the city promotes, or simply order anolina and tortelli in a bacaron-style osteria. Opera-goers should time visits to the Festival Verdi, when the Teatro Regio becomes the centre of the city’s calendar. On foot is best; the centre is compact and largely pedestrian-friendly.

Parma sits on the Milan–Bologna rail line, with frequent fast trains from both cities, and the historic centre is a short walk from the station. Note that some Correggio sites undergo periodic conservation closures, so check before building an itinerary around a single fresco.
