Ostia Antica

Rome’s ancient harbour city survives as one of the Mediterranean’s great archaeological landscapes, and it sits barely half an hour from the capital. Here you walk intact streets between brick apartment blocks, bars and bathhouses, then climb to a Renaissance fortress in a quiet borgo where the Tiber once met the sea.

Why visit

Ostia Antica answers a question few sites can: what did an ordinary Roman town actually look like? Pompeii froze in catastrophe; Ostia simply emptied. Its two- and three-storey apartment blocks, their courtyards, its tavern counters, grain offices and mosaic-floored guild seats record the daily commerce of the city that fed ancient Rome through its harbour. For travellers based in the capital, it offers the scale of a major archaeological park without the crowds, and it pairs naturally with a separate visit to the small fortified borgo beside it, where a papal castle, a cathedral and a tree-shaded park make an unhurried half day.

Character and history

Ostia — the name derives from ostium, the river mouth — was traditionally founded as a Roman colony at the mouth of the Tiber, and it grew into the port city that received Rome’s grain and goods. As the harbour moved seawards and the coastline shifted, the town’s fortune turned; silting, malaria and the changing river course gradually emptied it. Its ruins were quarried and buried for centuries until systematic excavation brought the ancient street grid back to light.

The medieval and Renaissance story continued on the hill beside the ruins. A Christian necropolis around the tomb of Santa Aurea became a fortified citadel under Pope Gregory IV in the ninth century — Gregoriopoli — and in 1483 Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, the future Pope Julius II, commissioned the Florentine architect Baccio Pontelli to build the castle that still anchors the piazza. Siege, flood and marsh finally emptied the borgo too, leaving a remarkably complete small town of castle, cathedral and terraced houses.

What to see

The Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica is the heart of any visit: kilometres of excavated streets, the theatre, the thermopolia with their counters, the mosaics of the Piazzale delle Corporazioni and the great bath complexes. Finds and sculpture from the excavations are gathered in the Ostiense Museum inside the park.

Across the way, the borgo holds its own compact ensemble. The Castle of Julius II rises over Piazza della Rocca, its casemated walls and moat a textbook of Renaissance military design, with frescoes of the myth of Hercules on the staircase. The Basilica of Saint Aurea stands beside it, and the adjoining Bishop’s Palace — Riario Hall preserves a painted hall from the era of Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere’s household. The Parco dei Ravennati below the castle walls is a public garden scattered with reused ancient remains, and along the old Roman road beyond the borgo lies the Pianabella Necropolis and Basilica, an early Christian basilica amid its burying ground.

How to experience

Give the archaeological park the better part of a day: the streets reward slow wandering, and shade is scarce in summer, so start early and carry water. Then cross to the borgo for lunch and an afternoon among castle, cathedral and park — the contrast between the two settlements is part of the pleasure. The Rome–Lido railway stops at Ostia Antica within walking distance of the entrance, which makes the trip an easy car-free excursion from the capital. Practical planning

The site is reached from Rome by the Roma–Porta San Paolo–Lido line to the Ostia Antica station, followed by a short walk over the road bridge; by car, the Via del Mare leads to parking near the entrance. Spring and autumn are the kindest seasons; the excavations offer little shade at midday. Closed Mondays applies to the state sites including the castle, though the borgo itself can be visited any day. Sturdy shoes help on the ancient paving. Opening hours vary by season and restoration works affect parts of the castle, so confirm details on the official park website before travelling.

Coastal Nettuno lies down the shore to the south, and the archaeological riches of Palestrina reward a detour into the Sacco valley.
