Oropa

Oropa is a mountain sanctuary settlement in a high basin above Biella, where a devotion to the Black Madonna has drawn pilgrims for some sixteen centuries. Around the sanctuary spread a UNESCO-listed Sacred Mount of twelve chapels, royal apartments, an alpine botanical garden, and trails leading toward the peaks and glacial lake of Monte Mucrone.

Oropa belongs to that rare class of places where faith, art and mountain landscape have grown together into a single composition. Character and history

Tradition traces Oropa’s origins to Saint Eusebius, evangeliser of eastern Piemonte and first bishop of Vercelli, who in the fourth century is said to have hidden a wooden image of the Madonna — credited to Saint Luke and brought from Palestine — in a cave here to protect it from Arian raids. The venerated statue, the Madonna Nera, is in fact the refined work of a sculptor from Valle d’Aosta working in the late thirteenth century, and it has remained the heart of the sanctuary’s identity ever since, honoured with repeated solemn coronations. The great building campaign of the seventeenth century produced the basilicas and theSacred Mount’s chapels, begun in 1620 with statues and frescoes by Giovanni d’Enrico and his workshop alongside Bartolomeo Termine and Agostino Silva, with eighteenth-century additions by the Termine family and the Galliari. The House of Savoy kept royal apartments in the complex, reflecting the pilgrimage’s courtly following. In 2003 the Sacro Monte entered the UNESCO World Heritage list together with the other Sacri Monti of Piemonte and Lombardy.
