Manta

Manta is a small town on the right bank of the Po near Saluzzo, on hills that look up at Monviso. Its fame rests on a FAI castle holding one of Europe’s great secular Gothic fresco cycles, but the borgo and its hillside add Romanesque churches, medieval gates and quiet rural chapels to a rewarding visit.

Why visit

Art lovers come for the castle’s Baronal Hall, where an anonymous late-Gothic master painted the Nine Worthies and Heroines and a fabulous Fountain of Youth — a cycle that holds its own with any courtly painting of fifteenth-century Europe. Yet Manta is more than its masterpiece: a Romanesque church that ranks among the oldest Christian monuments of south-western Piemonte, a hilltop sanctuary for the town’s patron, and a web of lanes, mills and votive chapels make the town feel like a compressed history of the Marchesato di Saluzzo. It pairs effortlessly with Saluzzo and the Varaita valley, and rewards travellers who enjoy places where one exceptional building anchors a genuinely lived-in town.

Character and history

The medieval castle was built in the thirteenth century as a military outpost of the Marquisate of Saluzzo, watching the road toward Monviso. In the fifteenth century Valerano, regent of the marquisate and a writer himself, transformed the fortress into an elegant residence and commissioned the great frescoes inspired by his father Tommaso III’s chivalric romance, “Le chevalier errant.” Four centuries of counts of Saluzzo della Manta followed, later restorations by the Radicati counts, and in 1985 Countess Elisabetta De Rege Provana donated the castle to the FAI, Italy’s National Trust. Below, the town kept its own sacred geography: a Benedictine-founded church whose origins reach back to the abbey of Pedona, parish and confraternity churches in the borgo, and wayside chapels raised after the plague years. The patron, San Leone Magno, is still celebrated on the last Sunday of August.

What to see

The Castello della Manta is unmissable: its Baronal Hall frescoes are described by FAI as a masterpiece of European late-Gothic painting, and a full visit adds the courtyard, old kitchens, cellars and the Church of Santa Maria al Castello with its Passion cycle, closing in the hillside park. In town, the Church of Santa Maria del Monastero is the deeper treasure for many — an eleventh-century Romanesque basilica with untouched external apses, whose frescoes of about 1430 came from a painter close to the castle’s master; its great Last Judgment survived wartime damage and painstaking restoration. On the hill between Manta and Saluzzo stands the Romanesque Sanctuary of San Leone Magno, the patronal shrine, while the hilltop Church of San Giacomo, one of the town’s earliest parishes, is tended today by the Alpini. The medieval borgo keeps its Arch of San Giorgio gate and the Watchtower of the Medieval Ricetto, later converted to a bell tower. The parish Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli holds a 1450 baptismal font, and in Borgo San Rocco the plague-vow Church of San Rocco, the little Chapel of San Rocco and the preserved Mill of San Rocco recall the rural economy of the plain. The Casa Baronale Riccati, a private noble residence incorporating an eighteenth-century silk mill, testifies to the valley’s textile past.

Begin with the FAI castle — booking a guided slot lets you see the frescoes with explanation — then walk down into the borgo and out to Santa Maria del Monastero, ideally at the quiet hour when the Romanesque light does its work. A short climb brings you to the San Leone sanctuary for the classic view across the Po plain toward Monviso. Combine Manta with Saluzzo’s medieval centre and Casa Cavassa, where some of the detached frescoes from the Monastero spent their restoration years — the two towns read as one story. Spring and autumn suit the hills best; check FAI’s calendar, since castle openings follow the seasonal visiting programme.

Practical planning

Manta lies just off the road between Saluzzo and Verzuolo, about an hour’s drive from Turin; the nearest railway stations are at Saluzzo and Savigliano, with buses and good cycling roads connecting. Everything of interest sits within a compact area — comfortable shoes suffice, though the sanctuaries involve a climb.
