Macugnaga

Macugnaga sits at the head of the Anzasca valley, a Walser mountain village beneath the colossal east wall of Monte Rosa. Germanic dialect, larch-and-stone houses, and a history written by gold miners give this alpine village a character distinct from any other Piemonte mountain town, with the great wall as a constant backdrop.

Why visit

The wall is the opening argument: Monte Rosa’s east face drops thousands of vertical metres above the village, a glaciated rampart that climbers liken to the Himalaya. Below it unfolds something rarer — a living Walser borgo, with hamlet ovens, granaries balanced on stone mushrooms and an archaic German still heard from older residents, alongside the walking and skiing that make a mountain holiday. Hikers can reach glacial lakes and wildlife-rich slopes; families can tour a gold mine or a 17th-century farmhouse museum; and everyone ends the day with the same extraordinary view. Macugnaga rewards travellers who like their alpine villages substantial in history as well as scenery. It also functions beautifully as a base: the lifts, trails and huts radiating from the valley head mean you can plan a week here without ever repeating a route, in either season.

Character and history

Walser colonists — an Alemannic people pushing over the high passes from the Valais — settled the valley in the thirteenth century, with foundations around 1256, clearing meadows and building in the blockbaum technique that still defines the village’s oldest houses. Isolation preserved the language and customs; the parish feast of Santa Maria Assunta and the embroidered festive costumes keep them visible today. The other formative industry was gold: veins in the mountainside of Monte Rosa were worked for centuries, most intensively at the Guia mine from 1710 and at the vast Pestarena complex higher up the valley, until the mines closed in the twentieth century. The village carries both inheritances comfortably — a museum of mountain life and smuggling in an old Staffa hayloft, and a miners’ memory near the Pestarena entrance. Bordering the Monte Moro pass, the valley also lived from trade and, in leaner times, from smuggling across the Swiss frontier — a chapter the local museum recounts with affection rather than embarrassment.

What to see

Start with the village’s oldest heart in Staffa. The Old Church of Santa Maria, first documented in 1317 and tied to the earliest Walser community, stands beside the Old Lime Tree, a centuries monumental linden that has watched over the churchyard for generations. The baroque Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta of 1754 anchors the main village. For Walser heritage, visit the Walser House Museum in Borca, a furnished 17th-century dwelling, and the Museum of the Mountain and Smuggling in Staffa. Gold history is tangible underground at the Ancient Gold Mine of Guia, where visitable tunnels still show the veins, and at the Pestarena Mines higher in the valley. Naturalists should allow time for the Monte Rosa Wildlife Oasis, where chamois, ibex and roe deer are regularly seen, and — for strong hikers — the high glacial cirque of Lake delle Locce and the wild waters of Lake delle Fate in Val Quarazza. The valley’s smaller hamlet churches, from the Church of the Beata Vergine delle Nevi to San Rocco at Motta, dot the walks between frazioni.

How to experience

Give Macugnaga three days: one for the village museums and hamlets, one for the mountain — the Belvedere lifts and a guided walk toward the glaciers, or in winter the ski slopes of Monte Moro and the cross-country ring at Pecetto — and one for the gold country, pairing the Guia visit with the drive up to Pestarena. Summer adds mountaineering with local guides, and the village serves as a stage on the Tour of Monte Rosa and the long Great Walser Trail. Eat Ossolan: black bread, gnocchetti all’ossolana, mountain cheeses and a glass of Prunent. Check seasonal opening of lifts, mines and museums before you commit to a plan; high-altitude walks need stable weather and an early start.

Practical planning

Macugnaga lies at the end of the Anzasca road, about forty minutes from Domodossola and the Milan–Simplon railway; the drive up the valley is part of the pleasure. Summer and the winter sports season are the busy periods; June and September offer calm, long light and quieter trails. Book the mine tour and museum visits in advance where required, and note that visits to the Old Church are arranged by phoning the parish. Pack layers — the village sits at 1,327 metres and evenings are cool even in August.

The lake country feels far but is close over the hills: Domodossola and its arcaded market square is the gateway town, while Stresa, Baveno, Cannobio and Cannero Riviera line the shores of Lake Maggiore within an easy excursion.
