La Morra

0 private tours·11 attractions

La Morra crowns one of the highest hills of the Barolo zone, its cobbled lanes winding down to a celebrated terrace above the Langhe vineyards. This is a village built on wine and views: cellars tunnel into the hill beneath the houses, and every bench, wall and piazza angles towards the sweeping UNESCO-listed landscape of Nebbiolo vineyards below.

Why visit

The terrace at Piazza Castello is arguably the most famous viewpoint in the Langhe — an immense balcony suspended over the vine rows of Brunate, Sarmassa and the valley towards Alba. Add a cluster of atmospheric cellars, a countryside chapel reinvented by two giants of contemporary art, a baroque bell tower you can climb, and some of the best dining in the Barolo zone, and La Morra justifies at least a full day, ideally an overnight. In autumn, when the fog settles into the valleys and the hills float above it like islands, the views alone are worth the drive. Unlike some of its neighbours, La Morra keeps a lived-in, unhurried air: the morning bread van still threads the hamlets, and the passeggiata on the terrace belongs as much to locals as to visitors.

Character and history

The village has medieval roots, growing up around a castle whose fate was sealed in 1544, when French occupying troops demolished the fortress. Stones from its great tower — which finally collapsed in 1700 — were folded into the base of the present bell tower, raised between 1709 and 1711 to designs by engineer Cocito of Neive. When the new tower began to lean, Domenico Pettiti of Cherasco simplified the upper structure and crowned it with a baroque bell chamber; the 31-metre tower stands today, slightly stoical about its tilt, as the symbol of the borgo. Around it the old town keeps its confraternity churches and noble palazzi, while the surrounding hamlets preserve ancient pievi and wayside chapels. La Morra’s modern fame rests on Barolo: its communes’ vineyards include some of the most lauded crus of the denomination, and in 2014 the landscape entered the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the vineyard landscapes of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato — recognition that has only sharpened travellers’ attention to these slopes.

What to see

Begin on the terrace: the Bell Tower of La Morra rises beside the Belvedere of La Morra, and on clear days the panorama runs from the Alps to the Roero. In the old town, the baroque Parish Church of San Martino presides near the town hall, flanked by the confraternity churches of San Sebastiano and San Rocco. Remnants of the medieval defences survive in the Bastions of La Morra, tracing the perimeter of the vanished castle. In the hamlets, the Romanesque campanile of the Church of the Santissima Annunziata and the countryside pieve of the Church of Santa Maria reward a slow drive through the vines. Save time for the Barolo Chapel out among the Brunate vineyards: a derelict, never-consecrated roadside chapel that Ceretto invited Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett to transform in 1999 into a blindingly coloured work of art. The smaller Chapel of the Madonna di Loreto and Chapel of Sant’Antonio Abate complete the constellation of wayside faith that dots these hills.

How to experience

Walk the ridge paths between La Morra and Barolo — the signposted trails through Brunate are among the finest short hikes in the Langhe, with the chapel as a perfect turn-around point. Book a cellar tasting in town or beneath the surrounding cascine, where Barolo matures in bottles lined up along candle-lit tunnels. In July the belvedere becomes an open-air stage for the Belvedere dal Vivo programme; in autumn the village fills with the business and perfume of the harvest. Between tastings, take an espresso on the terrace and simply watch the light move across the vine rows.

Practical planning

La Morra lies about twenty minutes’ drive from Alba. Parking sits at the edges of the borgo; the centre is pedestrian and steep, so wear sturdy shoes. Tower visits, cellar tastings and chapel access all follow seasonal schedules that change year to year — check the municipality’s and producers’ official pages (comune.lamorra.cn.it, ceretto.com) before travelling, and note that the Barolo Chapel has been undergoing restoration ahead of a planned reopening in 2026. Harvest weekends and truffle season book out far in advance.

Nearby places

The neighbourly circuit of Barolo villages is all within minutes: Barolo with its wine museum and castle, Monforte d’Alba amphitheatred above its valley, and Serralunga d’Alba with its mighty fortress. Grinzane Cavour, Alba and the broader Langhe area complete an easy radius, with the Roero hills across the Tanaro for a change of scene.
