Foligno

0 private tours·20 attractions

The one flat city of Umbria’s heartland, Foligno pairs a Renaissance piazza and frescoed signorial palace with a printing claim to fame — the first edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy — and a jousting festival of Baroque splendour. Out in its countryside wait a Romanesque abbey with 128 paired columns, paper mills, waterfalls, and a mountain plateau park.

Why visit

Foligno plays a different game from Umbria’s hill towns. Set on the broad floor of the Umbrian valley along the ancient Flaminian Way, it grew as a crossroads rather than a fortress, and its centre unfolds around one of the region’s grandest squares, Piazza della Repubblica, where cathedral, town hall, and the Trinci palace stand shoulder to shoulder. The city’s pedigree runs from Umbrian origins through a Roman municipium to the lordship of the Trinci family, who around 1310 extended their rule over Assisi, Spello, and Montefalco and left a palace whose frescoed halls still astonish. In 1472 its printers produced the first edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy, a fact the city wears proudly. Foligno is equally a gateway: within minutes rise the eleventh-century abbey of Sassovivo with its cloister of 128 paired columns, the paper-mill village of Pale, the Menotre waterfalls, and the marshland plateau of Colfiorito regional park. And each June and September the Giostra della Quintana — a joust first documented in 1613 — sends more than eight hundred costumed figures through the streets, reviving a Baroque festival with unmatched conviction.

Character and history

Foligno’s position made its fortune. Founded by the ancient Umbrians and later a Roman municipium on the Flaminian Way, it became an independent commune in the eleventh century before passing to the Trinci, whose signorial court dominated the valley for more than a century. The family’s palace, begun in its present form between 1389 and 1407, was both seat of power and stage of self-glorification — its halls painted with planetary gods, liberal arts, and the stories of Aeneas and Romulus. After the Trinci, the city joined the Papal States from the fifteenth century until unification in 1860.

Printing and faith left parallel marks. In 1472 Evangelista Mei of Foligno and the German printer Johann Numeister produced the first edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy in the premises of Palazzo Orfini. The city’s spiritual life centres on Saint Feliciano, its first bishop and a martyr, buried where the cathedral now stands, and on Blessed Angela of Foligno, whose remains rest in the church of San Francesco. Twentieth-century war damage was severe, but reconstruction kept the piazza and its monuments intact, and Foligno today reads as a confident, cycle-friendly valley city with a taste for pageantry and good food.

What to see

Anchor your visit on Piazza della Repubblica. The Cathedral of San Feliciano faces the square, its older Romanesque side facade of 1201 considered a small architectural gem; tradition places the saint’s tomb within. Beside it rises Trinci Palace, whose frescoed apartments are the city’s artistic highlight, now part of the Civic Museums in the Trinci Palace with their archaeological collection and picture gallery; the adjacent Municipal Library of Foligno preserves over six hundred drawings by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini. The square itself, Piazza della Repubblica, is the stage on which the Quintana is fought.

Fan out from there: the Romanesque Church of Santa Maria Infraportas, the Vanvitellian interior of the Church of San Salvatore, the deconsecrated Former Church of San Domenico (Auditorium), and the Franciscan Church of San Francesco with the remains of Blessed Angela. Just beyond the centre, the Renaissance Oratory of the Nunziatella keeps two frescoes by Perugino, and Orfini Palace commemorates the 1472 Divine Comedy. The seventeenth-century Gonzaga Ferrante Del Vodice Barracks recalls the city’s military role.

The countryside holds the best surprises: the Benedictine Sassovivo Abbey, eleventh-century, with its Romanesque cloister of paired and spiral columns; the paleochristian Church of Santa Maria in Campis; the medieval Trinci Fortress (Sant’Eraclio); and up the Menotre valley the Village of Pale and ancient paper mills, the painted rock church of the Hermitage of the Caves (Santa Maria Giacobbe), and the Menotre Waterfalls. On the eastern plateau, the Church of Santa Maria di Plestia stands near the wetlands of Colfiorito Regional Park.

How to experience

Plan a full city day and a full valley day. In town, work from the piazza outwards — cathedral and Trinci halls in the morning, oratories and printing heritage after lunch, an aperitivo as the arcade fills. If your dates allow, the Giostra della Quintana is unmissable: ten knights of the ten rioni skewer rings in three rounds, preceded by a parade of more than eight hundred costumed participants; it runs in June and again in September, with a Baroque market and rione banquets around it. On the second day, drive to Sassovivo for the cloister, then follow the Menotre valley through Pale to the waterfalls and hermitage, and finish on the Colfiorito plateau among water birds and broad skies. Cyclists get particular value here: the flat valley floor makes Foligno a natural hub for two wheels, and mountain-bike routes link the abbeys and convents of the plain.

Practical planning

Foligno sits on the main Rome–Ancona railway, making it one of the easiest Umbrian cities to reach by train, and the flat centre is simple to walk or cycle. The city works year-round, but June and September combine the two Quintana jousts with lively evenings; autumn adds food fairs celebrating local produce. Historic sites keep varying opening patterns — some churches close at midday and the Trinci museums observe weekly rest days — so verify times shortly before visiting rather than planning around fixed hours. Summer heat gathers on the valley floor, so schedule the Sassovivo and Menotre excursions for the cooler morning. Parking is plentiful outside the centre, and the piazza’s cafés make natural regrouping points between sights.

Nearby places

The valley neighbours are classics: /destination/spello/, /destination/assisi/, /destination/bevagna/, and /destination/montefalco/ all sit within a short drive, while /destination/spoleto/ closes the southern arc and /destination/perugia/ anchors the north. The hill town of /destination/gubbio/ and the temples-and-terraces streets of /destination/todi/ make slightly longer outings, while the Trasimeno side of the province — /destination/panicale/, /destination/castiglione-del-lago/, /destination/passignano-sul-trasimeno/, and the waters of /destination/lake-trasimeno/ — extends the itinerary west.
