Florence

Florence is where the Renaissance became a way of seeing. Within a walkable historic centre recognised by UNESCO since 1982, the city that nurtured Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Botticelli, Leonardo and Michelangelo stages its masterpieces where they were made: a marble cathedral crowned by an impossible dome, galleries hung with Botticelli, Oltrarno workshops keeping centuries-old trades alive.

Why visit

No other city of comparable size concentrates so much world-class art within so few streets. You can stand before Michelangelo’s David in the morning, trace Botticelli’s Primavera after lunch, and watch the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo by evening — all on foot. Florence rewards both the first-time visitor running the great itinerary and the repeat traveller who skips the queues for leather artisans, cloister libraries and neighbourhood trattorie. The city is also a living capital of craft and fashion, its boutiques and workshops a reminder that beauty here was always an industry as much as an ideal.

Character and history

Florence’s golden age ran from the late Middle Ages through the sixteenth century, powered by wool, banking and the Medici, whose patronage turned painters, sculptors and architects into the inventors of a new style. The city rose as the capital of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany and, briefly, of the new Kingdom of Italy. Its civic identity remains palpable: the Piazza della Signoria has been the stage of Florentine politics since medieval times, and the fortress-like Palazzo Vecchio still serves as town hall as well as museum. Beneath the art runs a mercantile practicality — the Ponte Vecchio has carried goldsmiths’ shops since the sixteenth century, and the loggia of the Mercato Nuovo Loggia (Il Porcellino) has hosted commerce since the 1500s.

What to see

Start with the cathedral complex on Piazza del Duomo, administered since 1296 by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore. The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence Duomo) is sheathed in polychrome marble; its crowning Brunelleschi’s Dome, climbed by reservation through narrow passages between the shells, remains a feat of engineering. The Giotto’s Bell Tower and the Baptistery of San Giovanni — with bronze doors that recast the history of sculpture — complete the group, alongside the Santa Reparata Excavations beneath the nave and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo (Cathedral Museum), where the original sculptural programme is reunited.

The great galleries follow. The Uffizi Gallery, housed in a building built as Medici offices between 1560 and 1580 to Giorgio Vasari’s design, holds painting from Giotto and Simone Martini through Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael and Caravaggio, with corridors lined by ancient Medici statuary; the Vasari Corridor links it across the river to the Medici’s grand residence, the Palazzo Pitti (Pitti Palace), whose Palatine Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art at Palazzo Pitti, Treasury of the Grand Dukes and Museum of Costume and Fashion unfold behind the square, with the Boboli Gardens spreading below. The Accademia Gallery guards Michelangelo’s David, and the Bargello National Museum offers the essential sculpture counterpart — Donatello, della Robbia, Verrocchio and Cellini.

Save time for the sacred and civic fabric: Basilica of Santa Croce with the Pazzi Chapel and Santa Croce Museum; the Basilica of San Lorenzo and the Medici Chapels; the Dominican Basilica of Santa Maria Novella; Orsanmichele Church and Museum; and the Augustinian Basilica of Santo Spirito anchoring the artisan Oltrarno, where the Brancacci Chapel preserves Masaccio’s revolutionary frescoes. Above the south bank, the Abbey of San Miniato al Monte and Piazzale Michelangelo frame the classic view.

How to experience

Book everything that can be booked — dome ascent, Uffizi, Accademia — and cluster visits geographically, one neighbourhood per day. Balance the icons with quieter rooms: the Palazzo Davanzati (Museum of the Old Florentine House), Casa Martelli Museum, Horne Museum and Museo Stefano Bardini show how Florentines actually lived; the Museo Galileo (Institute and Museum of the History of Science) honours the city’s scientific side. Shop the San Lorenzo Central Market, breathe in five centuries of perfume at the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, and end days on the Arno or in a wine bar in San Niccolò beneath the Tower of San Niccolò.

Practical planning

The historic centre is compact and largely pedestrian; arrive by train at Santa Maria Novella rather than attempting to drive. Timed reservations are effectively essential for the dome and the major galleries in any season, and hours and access rules change regularly — the cathedral complex, for instance, uses named passes that have been revised in recent years, so check the official site shortly before travel. Museums commonly close Mondays. Peak crowds run from late spring through early autumn; November and February offer the city at its most local. Comfortable shoes are non-negotiable on cobblestones and stairs.

Nearby places

For a change of air, the hill town of Fiesole sits above the city with Roman ruins and the best view; Impruneta serves terracotta country and a venerated Marian basilica, while Vinci pairs Leonardo’s birthplace with Chianti olive hills.
