Codroipo

Most travellers speed through Codroipo on the rail line between Venice and Udine, unaware that nearby stands Villa Manin, the grandest country residence of Friuli and the stage on which Napoleon sealed the fall of the Venetian Republic. Around it stretch the spring-fed wetlands and farm plain of the central lowland — a stop for art, history and quiet water meadows.

Codroipo’s claim is singular: Villa Manin at Passariano, built by the family of the last Doge of Venice, with an eighteen-hectare walled park and exhibition halls that put major contemporary shows in a baroque shell. History lovers come for the villa’s Napoleonic chapter — the negotiations that ended in the Treaty of Campo Formio were steered from here — while nature walkers head instead to the Risorgive park, where spring water wells up through pools of astonishing clarity to give birth to the Stella river. Between the two, an unhurried market town offers a genuine slice of lowland Friuli few tourists see.

Character and history

Codroipo grew as an agricultural centre of the Friulian plain, its parish and market serving villages strung between the Tagliamento and the resurgences. Its fortune changed in the seventeenth century, when Ludovico I Manin of the Passariano branch chose this ground for the family’s country seat. The Manin rose to preside over Venice itself: Ludovico Manin, raised at Passariano, became the last Doge of the Serenissima, and in 1797 Napoleon Bonaparte made the villa his headquarters during the Italian campaign. In its salons — beneath frescoes by Louis Dorigny — the negotiations unfolded that led to the Treaty of Campo Formio of 17 October 1797, the act that extinguished the Republic of Venice in favour of the Habsburgs.

The villa later passed through inheritance and decline until the Autonomous Region Friuli Venezia Giulia acquired it in 1969; it now operates as the region’s flagship exhibition venue, and the surrounding farmland still reads as the English travellers described it: hedged fields, willows and slow water. The town itself carries its own layers, from the parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore to a small archaeological museum documenting Roman settlement of the plain.

What to see

Villa Manin (Passariano) is the destination: a central residence flanked by long orthogonal barchesse, its atrium frescoed by Dorigny with a Triumph of Spring, its festival hall dressed in eighteenth-century stuccoes and Murano chandeliers, its east wing now housing a carriage museum. The Historic Park of Villa Manin spreads behind the villa inside the walls — avenues of magnolias and roses, allegorical statuary and lawns built on French baroque bones, ideal for a slow circuit after the interiors.

Back in town, the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore (Duomo of Codroipo) is the parish heart, and the nearby Archaeological Museum of Codroipo gathers finds from Roman villas and settlements of the plain, reminding visitors that this flat green country was farmed and roaded two millennia ago. South of the centre, the Risorgive Park of Codroipo protects about forty-five hectares of spring wetland created as a reserve in 1983: boardwalks and dirt paths circle the “olle” — the spring pools — where endemic plants grow and foxes, hares and roe deer move at dusk. Birdsong replaces traffic almost as soon as you leave the last house, and in the clear water you can watch the Stella river, one of Friuli’s quietest, literally being born.

Plan Codroipo around Villa Manin’s exhibition calendar: the villa shows major art retrospectives, and visiting an exhibition here doubles as an architecture tour. Reserve a morning for the park and interiors, lunch in Passariano or in town, and give the late afternoon to the Risorgive, when the light drops through the alders and the spring pools are at their clearest. Cyclists can link the villa and the wetlands on flat country roads, and the Alpe-Adria cycle route passes through the municipality toward the sea. In autumn the surrounding plain fills with vineyard and orchard traffic toward the Collio — a good season for combining the two.

Codroipo sits on the Venice–Udine railway line, about 25 kilometres west of Udine; the station is a short ride or walk from the centre, while Passariano is best reached by car or bicycle. Villa Manin is run by the region’s Azienda speciale — see villamanin.it or cultura.gov.it for current exhibitions, hours and tickets — and the Risorgive park is free and open all year, with a visit of roughly two hours. Spring shows the springs at their most photogenic; summer brings exhibition crowds to the villa, so book slots ahead.
