Cittadella

Cittadella is the walled town you can walk on top of: a perfect medieval egg of walls, towers and gates raised by Padua in 1220, and the only city in Europe whose entire rampart walkway survives fully walkable. Fifteen metres above the rooftops, an elliptical mile of parapet circles frescoed palazzi, quiet squares and the plain of the Brenta.

Why visit

Few places in Europe let you circle a living medieval town along its own battlements, and Cittadella’s ring is the reason to come: a continuous 1,600-metre promenade at parapet height, with the rooftops and gardens of the old town below and, on clear days, the mountains from Monte Grappa to the Euganean Hills. The town inside is no stage set but a genuine centro storico, with a Duomo holding a Jacopo Bassano fresco cycle, a jewel-box theatre with Bagnara’s frescoes, and museums threaded into towers and loggias. Its scale is a gift: a half-day suffices for the essentials, a full day lets you add the outlying pieve and the riverside church. Cittadella also works beautifully as a base between Padua, Bassano and Vicenza, and its tourist infrastructure, from guided visits to the combined Cittadella Card, is unusually polished for a town of its size.

Character and history

The commune of Padua founded Cittadella in 1220 as a fortified outpost to shield the borders of its contado against Treviso and Vicenza, on ground already crossed by the Roman Via Postumia. The town’s first decades were brutal: between 1237 and 1256 it fell under Ezzelino III da Romano, who built the Torre di Malta in 1251 as a prison whose cruelties entered Dante’s Divine Comedy. Under the Carraresi of Padua the town became a district capital, and in 1406 it passed with the mainland to Venice, whose podestà ruled until Napoleon ended the Republic in 1797; Austrian rule followed until 1866. The walls themselves describe an almost perfect ellipse, with four gates aligned to the cardinal roads, among them Porta Padova with the prison tower folded into its flank. Modern Cittadella has invested seriously in restoration, and the fully walkable rampart circuit, reopened after careful conservation, has made the town a model of medieval-wall tourism in Italy.

What to see

The defining experience is the Cittadella Medieval Walls and Rampart Walkway, a complete circuit at 15 metres’ height taking about three-quarters of an hour, with boardwalks over the gatehouses and views both inward and outward. The circuit descends into the Torre di Malta and Civic Archaeological Museum, where finds from the Bronze Age to the Renaissance fill the prison tower raised by Ezzelino. The four gates punctuate the walls: Porta Padovana (Padua Gate) to the east, Porta Bassanese (Bassano Gate) to the south with the visitor office, the monumental triple-arched Porta Vicentina (Vicenza Gate) to the west, and Porta Trevisana (Treviso Gate) to the north. On the main square, the Cittadella Cathedral (Duomo), built between 1774 and 1826 to plans associated with Domenico Cerato, preserves medieval and Renaissance frescoes including parts of a cycle by Jacopo Bassano; the adjacent Cathedral Museum (Sacred Art Museum) displays the diocesan collections. The Teatro Sociale (Cittadella) of 1817, its auditorium frescoed by Francesco Bagnara of La Fenice fame, is visited by guided tour. Civic palazzi frame the centre: the Palazzo Pretorio (Cittadella), once the podestà’s seat and now an exhibition hall, and the Palazzo della Loggia (Cittadella) on the cathedral square. Religious architecture extends beyond the walls, notably the Church of Santa Maria del Torresino leaning against Porta Padova, the Convent and Church of San Francesco with its cloister, and the early medieval Pieve di San Donato built of Brenta pebbles, the territory’s first Christian parish church. Outside the Porta Padova road stands the late-seventeenth-century Oratory of the Saviour at Villa Ca’ Nave, and along the Brenta the former Benedictine Church of Santa Lucia in Brenta keeps frescoes in the manner of the Bassano workshop.

How to experience

Buy the combined ticket at the Porta Bassano office, climb to the walkway late in the afternoon when the plain turns golden, and walk the full circuit clockwise so the sun stays behind you. Drop into the Torre di Malta mid-loop to break the walk and descend through the town for a spritz on the Duomo square. Join one of the themed guided visits that open the Teatro Sociale and Palazzo Pretorio, and in summer look for evening openings on the walls, when the circuit is lit and the town below hums with aperitivo tables. Cyclists can link Cittadella to Bassano along the Brenta on quiet rural roads.

Practical planning

Cittadella lies between Padua (about 30 minutes by train or bus) and Bassano del Grappa, with parking just outside the walls at Porta Bassano and other gates. The rampart walk involves stairs and crenellated parapets and is not suitable for severe mobility limits; the tower museum has a lift. The walkway operates daily through the year with seasonal closing times and a last entry an hour before, so check the current schedule. The Cittadella Card bundles the walls, tower museum, Duomo museum, theatre and oratory and repays itself quickly.
