Cisterna di Latina sits on the edge of the former Pontine Marshes, gateway to one of the world’s most celebrated romantic gardens at Ninfa and a town rebuilt with courage after near-total wartime destruction. It is a destination of gardens and memory, tuff cellars, Appian Way stones and the horsemen of the Agro Pontino.

Why visit

Travellers come to Cisterna above all for the Garden of Ninfa, the romantic garden created by the Caetani family among the ruins of a medieval town, which opens only on restricted dates and books out far ahead. But the town rewards the wait: beneath Palazzo Caetani lie deep underground galleries, its halls hold frescoes and a museum devoted to the butteri, the cattle-herding horsemen of these plains, and along the old Via Appia stands the way-station of Tres Tabernae, where the Acts of the Apostles places Saint Paul. Rebuilt after 1944, Cisterna also tells a modern story of loss and return that gives the visit unexpected weight.

Character and history

The oldest layers are ancient: from 312 BC a post station called Tres Tabernae — “three taverns” — stood on the Via Appia, and the Acts of the Apostles records Saint Paul greeted by believers there on his road to Rome. The place became a bishopric, declined after Saracen raids, and around the year 1000 survivors settled a nearby hill, the “Terra di Cisterna”, whose name traditionally recalls a great cistern attributed to Nero — an ancient reservoir that still survives beneath the later palace. A fief of the Counts of Tusculum and then the Frangipani, Cisterna passed in 1504 to the Caetani, whose Bonifacio rebuilt the castle as a patrician palace between 1560 and 1574, frescoed by Girolamo Siciolante da Sermoneta and the Zuccari brothers. In January 1944 the Battle of Cisterna devastated the town — the great majority of its buildings were destroyed before the Allies entered that May — and the postwar decades transformed it into a prosperous agricultural centre, notably of kiwifruit, on land the reclamation finally drained.

The Garden of Ninfa is the headline: a romantic garden of waterways, bridges and more than a thousand plant species woven through the ruins of the medieval city of Ninfa, cared for by the Roffredo Caetani Foundation and open only on selected days with mandatory advance booking. In town, the Palazzo Caetani Monumental Complex and Museum gathers the civic collection and frescoed halls, while beneath it the Caetani Underground Galleries descend some fifteen metres into ancient tuff and pozzolan workings, partly explored to this day and famous for a nativity scene at Christmas. On the piano nobile the Permanent Exhibition of the Buttero and the Horse celebrates the Agro Pontino’s horsemen, including bronzes by Duilio Cambellotti. Out on the Appian Way, the Tres Tabernae Archaeological Area exposes a stretch of the ancient basalt road at the very station named in the Acts of the Apostles. The town’s principal church, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo, faces the main square alongside the Fontana Biondi (Fountain of the Beautiful Nymph), a civic fountain tied to the victory over malaria; and at the Ninfa gate the Pantanello Park restores the wetland landscape of the old marshes, with lakes and migratory birds.

How to experience

Plan around Ninfa’s calendar first: the garden opens on a limited schedule published by the Foundation, tickets are sold online in advance, and dates in spring and autumn sell out quickly — book weeks ahead and build the rest of the trip around your slot. Combine the garden with Pantanello Park for the wetland birds, and with Sermoneta’s castle nearby for the full Caetani day. In Cisterna itself, take the palace and underground tours on the same visit, since access runs on guided schedules; the underground galleries are cool even in summer. Drivers reach Cisterna from Rome in about an hour via the Pontina; the town also serves as a base for Appian Way cycling. Wander the rebuilt centre in the evening — its postwar layout is generous, the piazza lively, and the kiwifruit country roads quiet.

Two nights let you cover Ninfa, the palace complex and Tres Tabernae without rush; a long day trip can do the garden plus the borgo.
