Castelrotto
The principal village of the Sciliar plateau and gateway to the Alpe di Siusi, Castelrotto — Kastelruth in German, Ciastel in Ladin — combines a baroque bell tower that towers over the piazza, a calvary hill, folk-music fame through the Kastelruther Spatzen, and official status among Italy’s most beautiful borghi beneath the UNESCO Dolomites.
Why visit
Castelrotto is the largest municipality of the Sciliar area and the main village below the Alpe di Siusi, Europe’s most celebrated high pasture, and its identity is written in three languages from the first street sign. The village core is a gem of painted houses around Kraus Square, dominated by the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul and its soaring bell tower, whose baroque spire is the village’s signature silhouette. Official recognition follows the beauty: the municipal site lists Castelrotto among the Borghi più Belli d’Italia and ties it directly to the UNESCO Dolomites landscape that frames the horizon. Add the folk-music cult of the Kastelruther Spatzen — the village’s own band, whose museum draws fans from across the German-speaking world — and lift access to the high Alpe in minutes, and the village functions as both destination and base.
Character and history
Castelrotto has been a market and pilgrimage centre of the plateau for centuries, and its spiritual geography still structures a visit. The mother church of Saints Peter and Paul stands on the piazza; a via crucis climbs the Calvary Hill (Kofel) beside the village, where chapels, castle ruins and — in recent seasons — open-air art installations under the “Kunst unterm Schlern” banner occupy the hill. The municipality’s civic seat on Krausenplatz looks onto a square designed for gatherings, festival days and the evening passeggiata.
Modern fame arrived by way of song. The Kastelruther Spatzen, a folk-music group formed in the village, went on to sell some fifteen million records and to receive honorary citizenship of their home commune — honours collected in the Kastelruther Spatzen Museum, established in 2005 beneath the band’s official shop and fitted out with eighteenth-century mountain timber. Few villages of this size carry such a specific musical pilgrimage, and the annual Spatzen concerts fill the surrounding pastures with fans.
What to see
On the square, the pairing of the Parish Church of Saints Peter and Paul and the Bell Tower of Castelrotto is the essential image — the tower rises far above the roofline and can be seen from villages across the plateau. Step into Kraus Square for the painted facades and the shop arcades, then follow the stations up Calvary Hill (Kofel) for the panoramic view over the Sciliar group.
Three small museums deepen the picture. The Museum of Traditional Costumes in the historic Casa Laechler preserves the valley’s ornate folk dress, still worn at festivals; the Kastelruther Spatzen Museum tells the band’s story through gold and diamond records and fan gifts; and out in the fraction of Tagusa, the School Museum and Cobbler’s Workshop (Tagusens) reconstructs rural schooling and craft with touching fidelity.
How to experience
Split your time between village and Alpe. Give the piazza, the churches and the Kofel a relaxed half-day — ideally ending at the calvary chapels with the evening light on the Schlern — then ride up to the Alpe di Siusi, whose pastures and panoramic paths begin effectively at the village’s back door. The municipal site’s own news revolves around the high pasture’s parking and reservation systems, so treat the Alpe as part of the Castelrotto experience rather than a separate trip.
Time a visit to folk costume festivals or a Spatzen concert if you can; otherwise the village rewards quiet mornings, when the tower’s shadow crosses the square. The surrounding hamlets — Siusi allo Sciliar, San Valentino, Sant’Osvaldo, Tagusa among them — offer gentle walks between chapels and farmsteads, and the regional highlights guide recommends pairing the village with the high pasture in both winter and summer seasons.
Practical planning
Castelrotto lies south-east of Bolzano, reached by bus from the provincial capital or by car up from the Isarco valley; the plateau roads are well maintained but the Alpe access is demand-managed, with parking reservations for its main lots introduced from summer 2026. Village museums keep small, seasonally variable opening schedules — the Spatzen museum, for instance, sits inside the band shop and closes Sundays — so check before planning a museum day. Summer is high season on the Alpe, winter brings the skiing of the Seiser Alm railway sector, and the shoulder months of June and September offer the quietest village stays. Accommodation ranges from farm stays in the fractions to hotels on the plateau edge.
Nearby places
The high pasture itself is the near neighbour, but among documented destinations: Siusi lies at the Alpe’s foot below the village, Bolzano is the provincial capital within an hour, and the valleys of Val Gardena with Ortisei begin over the hill. The Dolomites and Alpe di Siusi as destination areas frame the whole plateau.
