Cannobio stands near the Swiss border on Lake Maggiore’s north-western shore, a town of golden waterfront houses gathered around one of the lake’s most beautiful lakeside squares. Cannobio rewards visitors who like a town that works on several levels at once. The lakeside is convivial — cafés, gelaterie and a promenade that hosts summer concerts and evening markets — while the lanes immediately behind lead to shrines, arches and viewpoints. History travellers can trace a famous 1522 miracle through two churches; nature lovers can walk to a gorge where a mountain torrent cuts through polished rock. Its position also makes it a natural first or last stop for journeys between Milan, the lake and the Alpine passes toward Switzerland.

Character and history

For centuries Cannobio guarded the mouth of the Cannobina valley and the route north. The event that fixed it on the map occurred in the winter of 1522, when a printed image of the Passion displayed in the town was said to have bled from its painted wounds and emitted a small rib matching the painted Christ’s proportions. The relic was placed in the collegiate church, and devotional crowds followed; decades later Cardinal Charles Borromeo had the Sanctuary of the Santissima Pietà built on the site of the marvel, to a design associated with Pellegrino Tibaldi. The old defensive borgo of Carmine Superiore was planted on the hill to watch the approach roads, and its Romanesque church still occupies a terrace with the lake spread below. Cannobio was formally raised to the dignity of a city only in 2006 — a late acknowledgment of a very long story.

Begin at the monumental Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, the arcaded lakeside square that is the town’s living room, framed by the harbour and the old centre. At the edge of the historic core stands the Sanctuary of the Santissima Pietà, built after the miracle of 1522; its altarpiece tradition connects with the workshop of Gaudenzio Ferrari, and the atmosphere inside is deliberately dim and contemplative. The Collegiate Church of San Vittore in the upper lanes preserves the relic of the Pietà miracle in its treasury.

For the medieval chapter, climb to the Medieval Village of Carmine Superiore, a compact cluster of stone houses around the Church of San Gottardo, whose terrace view alone justifies the walk. Nature makes a strong claim too: the Orrido di Sant’Anna Gorge squeezes the Cannobino torrent between smooth, overhanging walls of green-shadowed rock, a short trip from town and a favourite of walkers arriving on footpaths from Sant’Agata. In the valley behind, the Acqua Carlina Spring recalls the mineral-water tradition of the Valle di San Carlo. Round off the circuit at Palazzo Parasi, the town’s exhibition palace, which keeps a programme of contemporary art shows.

How to experience

Time your visit for Sunday, when the long-established lakeside market fills the square and promenade with stalls from both sides of the border. In the morning walk the old town and the two miracle churches; after lunch, follow the signs to the Orrido and take the short path into the gorge, where the temperature drops several degrees even in August. Late afternoon suits Carmine Superiore, with the light coming up the lake. Swimmers have the free beaches and lido lawns at the edge of town, and pedal boats and kayak hire operate in season. Practical planning

Cannobio lies on the SS34 between Verbania and the Swiss border at Piaggio Valmara, with frequent buses along the lake and seasonal boat services; the nearest motorway access is via Verbania. The centre is compact and flat along the water, though reaching Carmine Superiore involves a steady uphill lane — drive part of the way or allow half an hour on foot. Summer weekends bring heavy traffic and tight parking; use the signed lots at the town entrances. Churches are freely visitable outside service times; the sanctuary and collegiate church keep limited opening hours, so check with the tourist office. May, June and September combine warm water with thinner crowds.
