Arezzo

1 private tour·21 attractions

Arezzo is the working Tuscan city that art history cannot leave alone: Etruscan capital, medieval goldsmith town, and home to Piero della Francesca’s great fresco cycle. Its official portal calls it an intimate, welcoming city, and the phrase fits — a compact hill of medieval lanes and Renaissance squares that people actually live in.

Why visit

Travellers who find Florence oppressive discover in Arezzo the same wealth of art at human scale. The undoubted masterpiece is Piero della Francesca’s Legend of the True Cross, painted between 1452 and 1466 in the Bacci Chapel of the Basilica of San Francesco and rightly counted among the supreme achievements of the early Renaissance. Around it lie a sloping Renaissance square that has starred in cinema, a Romanesque pieve, an Etruscan and Roman archaeology museum beside an amphitheatre, and an antiques fair that has run on the first Sunday of every month since 1968. The city’s own official tourism portal, Discover Arezzo, promotes it as a place easy to explore on foot, filled with museums, medieval lanes, and artisan workshops — a fair description of a city that rewards two unhurried days.

Character and history

Arezzo stood as one of the twelve great Etruscan cities — its archaeological museum takes its name from the Etruscan noble Gaius Cilnius Maecenas, whose name became a byword for patronage — and Roman Arretium was famous for its seal-red pottery. The medieval city grew wealthy on metalwork and banking, a Ghibelline stronghold ruled by the bishops and later contested by Florence; from here, tradition also credits Guido of Arezzo with inventing modern musical notation. The Renaissance brought Giorgio Vasari, painter and first art historian, whose house is now a museum, and the great fresco commission that turned a local chapel into a pilgrimage site for painters. The modern city remains Tuscany’s goldsmithing capital, a trade still visible in the workshops off Corso Italia.

The city’s texture rewards attention as much as its monuments do. Corso Italia runs from the station-side gates up through the antiques quarter to the Pieve, lined with the facades of banking families; the Passeggio del Prato spreads below the fortress where the joust lists are erected twice a year; and the hills around the centre keep their Etruscan walls in fragments. Ivan Bruschi’s house museum of antiquities, the diocesan museum beside the cathedral, and the small museums devoted to the joust and to goldsmithing give even a second visit new rooms to enter — a density that makes Arezzo a base as much as a destination.

What to see

Piero’s Bacci Chapel frescoes inside the Basilica of San Francis come first, visited in timed slots. Then Piazza Grande, the sloping square where medieval facades meet Vasari’s loggia and the Fraternita dei Laici palace. The cathedral of Saints Peter and Donatus crowns the hill beside the star-shaped Medici Fortress, designed by the Sangallo and completed in 1540, now a park with valley views. The Romanesque Santa Maria della Pieve, the church of San Domenico with its Cimabue crucifix, the Casa Vasari museum, and the Roman amphitheatre beside the national archaeological museum fill a second day, with Petrarca’s house and the Medici-era collections rounding out the city’s abundant museum circuit.

How to experience

Time the city to its rituals. On the first Sunday and preceding Saturday of each month the Fiera Antiquaria spreads hundreds of stalls through the streets, the oldest antiques market of its kind in Italy. In June and September the Giostra del Saracino revives a knightly joust in Piazza Grande with flag-wavers and period costume. Visit the frescoes early in a timed morning slot when the chapel is calmest, then walk the Corso for goldsmiths’ windows and an espresso standing at the counter. The Discover Arezzo portal sells combined museum tickets and guided tours, which simplify a short stay considerably.

Practical planning

Arezzo sits on the main Florence–Rome rail line, barely an hour from Florence by fast regional and express trains, and makes an effortless car-free base. The station sits below the hill; the historic centre is a steady climb, best done in comfortable shoes. Museums, including the fresco chapel, keep fixed closing days and seasonal hours — the chapel uses mandatory timed reservations — so book ahead rather than improvising. The city is lively year-round, quieter in August, busiest during the antiques weekend and joust dates. Base day trips toward Cortona, the Valdichiana wine roads, or the Casentino forests here.

Nearby places

Within the province, the valley of Piero della Francesca stretches toward Sansepolcro and Monterchi, while Cortona’s Etruscan Museum and Poppi’s castle anchor the different corners of the territory described by the provincial portal.
