Abbadia Lariana

On the Lecco arm of Lake Como, Abbadia Lariana stretches between water and mountain: a lakeside promenade and two kilometres of beach below, and above it hamlets, olive terraces, a silk mill turned museum, a fifty-metre waterfall and the mining galleries of the Grigna’s foothills. It is Como without the coach parties, rooted in working history.

Why visit

Most visitors hurry along the lakeside road towards Varenna without stopping; those who pause find one of the lake’s most varied small towns. Abbadia has the lake essentials — beaches, a panoramic walkway suspended over the water, ferries across to the opposite shore — but its real character lies in the vertical dimension. A path from the hamlet of Linzanico climbs an hour to the Cenghen waterfall, where the water drops roughly fifty metres into a rocky amphitheatre at the heart of the Grigna; higher still, the Piani Resinelli plateau opens onto mining tunnels open for guided visits. Down in town, a nineteenth-century silk twisting mill survives intact as a civic museum, the most tangible trace of the trade that once employed the whole shore. Between them lie a dozen ancient hamlets, each with its own church, and the start of the Sentiero del Viandante, the long-distance path along the lake’s eastern shore.

Character and history

The name says it plainly: Abbadia comes from the abbey of San Pietro di Mandello, a Benedictine monastery founded around 770–775 by the Lombard king Desiderius, whose church successors stand in the parish of San Lorenzo today. Roman-period finds point to earlier settlement on this shore, where the mountains pinch the lake narrowest. From the seventeenth to the nineteenth centuries silk transformed the local economy — mulberry groves on the slopes, silkworm raising in the courtyards, and twisting mills along the water — with the Monti family’s factory, active from 1817, becoming the emblem of the trade. When the silk age faded, the mountain economy of pastures and mines defined the upper hamlets, and today the town lives partly from tourism and partly from the quiet persistence of lake life. Its dozen frazioni, from Borbino on its shelf of olive terraces to Linzanico under the waterfall’s valley, still keep their own feasts and character.

What to see

At the water’s edge, the Lakeside Walkway runs nearly two kilometres suspended over the lake, passing the Secular Mulberry Tree at the Pier, a monumental living relic of the silk era. The Parish Church of San Lorenzo rises on the site associated with the old abbey and keeps a well-regarded painting of the Madonna of the belt with saints Augustine, Monica and Dominic. In the heart of town, the Setificio Monti Civic Museum (Silk Mill Museum) preserves the twisting mill as it stood in the mid-nineteenth century, hydraulic wheel and all, reopened as a museum in 1998. Medieval memory survives in La Torraccia (Medieval Tower), the ruin of a twelfth-century tower by the lakeside road. Up in the hamlets, the Church of San Martino at Borbino, the deconsecrated Church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo at Castello and the Borbino Washhouse on the hamlet square sketch centuries of mountain life; the trail past Cenghen Waterfall leads into the Grigna’s wild core, and on the Piani Resinelli the Piani Resinelli Mining Park takes visitors underground through the Anna mine gallery.

How to experience

Divide the day by altitude. Morning on the lake: walk the walkway, swim at one of the beaches, or take the ferry across the water for the classic view back to the shore. Early afternoon, climb: the easy hour to the Cenghen waterfall suits most walkers, and the cool of the gorge is welcome in summer. On weekends the mining park runs ninety-minute guided tours through the Anna mine — the galleries hold a steady ten to twelve degrees, so bring a layer — and the museum keeps afternoon hours on its open days. Walkers should look into the Sentiero del Viandante, whose first stages start here towards Varenna. Check each site’s schedule before setting out; mountain venues open seasonally and often only on weekends.

Practical planning

Abbadia Lariana has its own station on the Lecco–Sondrio line, with Lecco about ten minutes away and Milan reachable with a change; the SS36 road passes through, busy at weekends in summer. The lakeside is flat and cycle-friendly, while hamlet roads and trails climb steeply — a small car or good legs help. Accommodation is concentrated in guesthouses, B&Bs and flats rather than large hotels. Two days — one for the lake and museum, one for the mountain — make a satisfying stay.

Nearby places

Across and up the shore lies Varenna, the lake’s most photographed village, directly opposite by ferry; the hamlet of Vezio sits above it with its castle, both within a short drive or a stretch of the Viandante path.
