Vieste occupies the spur’s very tip, where the Gargano promontory drops into the Adriatic. Character and history

Vieste grew as the port and stronghold of the Gargano’s southern coast, its houses stacked on the rupe for defence. In 1554 a Saracen raid devastated the town; the Chianca Amara, the “bitter stone” where tradition says many inhabitants were killed, remains a place of memory near the cathedral. Norman and Swabian rulers rebuilt the fortress on the cliff, and the town lived from fishing, farming and seafaring into the modern era, when tourism arrived and stayed. Vieste today divides naturally between the medieval borgo on the rock, the nineteenth-century quarter below it, and the beaches that fringe both — with the castle and cathedral keeping their ancient hold on the skyline.
