Benevento

Benevento commands the saddle of the Sannio hills where the Via Traiana crossed toward Apulia, once capital of a Lombard principality and later a papal enclave. Its streets hold a UNESCO-listed Lombard church, a triumphal arch of Trajan, a Roman theatre, and the legends of the dancing witches.

Why visit

Few Italian cities of this size stack so much history in a walkable centre. The church of Santa Sofia, an eighth-century Lombard foundation, belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage serial site of the Longobards in Italy; a Roman arch raised for Trajan in 114 AD still spans the old highway; an imperial theatre stages summer performances among its ruins; and a papal fortress keeps watch where dukes and pontiffs once contested the town. Around the monuments runs a living provincial capital of arcaded cafés, chocolate shops and a university, all wrapped by rivers and hills. The city’s folklore — the witches, or janare, said to gather beneath a legendary walnut tree — gives even its shop windows a character found nowhere else.

Character and history

Samnites held this crossroads before Rome took it, and Trajan’s arch of 114 AD honours the emperor who rebuilt the highway bearing his name. But Benevento’s defining age came after the fall of Rome: as capital of the Lombard duchy — later principality — of Benevento, it ruled much of southern Italy and built Santa Sofia, whose star-shaped, breathing plan and shaggy medieval stonework remain among the most singular churches of the early Middle Ages. The twelfth century added the Romanesque cloister beside it, carved with teeming reliefs. When the Lombards yielded, the popes claimed the city and ruled it as an enclave for centuries, raising the Rocca dei Rettori above the confluence of the Sabato and Calore rivers on a Lombard tower. The bronze doors of the cathedral, cast in the thirteenth century, narrate that long story in relief. Earthquakes and wars repeatedly wounded the town, yet the layers remained legible; in 2011 UNESCO inscribed Santa Sofia among the “Places of Power” of the Longobards, and the city’s museums — provincial, diocesan and contemporary — now interpret the whole inheritance.

What to see

Start at Santa Sofia and its twelfth-century cloister, home to the Museo del Sannio with the province’s collections. Walk down to the Arch of Trajan, interpreted in the Museum of the Arch of Trajan, then to the Roman Theatre by the river. The Rocca dei Rettori guards the hilltop, and the Cathedral with its bronze doors faces the arcaded piazza; the nearby Diocesan Museum descends into an underground archaeological route. Contemporary Benevento shines in Mimmo Paladino’s Hortus Conclusus, an open-air stone garden, and the Arcos Museum. For the folklore, the Museum of the Witches gathers the janare legends; the Roman Arch of the Sacrament area, the deconsecrated Sant’Ilario a Port’Aurea, the historic Municipal Villa and the surviving stretches of city walls round out a full circuit.

How to experience

Give Benevento a day and a half at least. Begin with Santa Sofia in the morning quiet, then follow the Roman thread — arch, theatre, walls — in the afternoon light; the city’s tourism portal (beneventoturismo.it) posts current opening hours for the civic sites, which shift seasonally. Food is a reason in itself: the province’s cheeses, salumi, wines of the Sannio hills and the city’s chocolate tradition fill the arcades around the cathedral. Summer evenings bring concerts to the Roman theatre and festivals to the Rocca. Drivers can pair the city with hilltop towns of the valley; walkers will find the centre compact and comfortably flat along the river. For the witch legends, save the museum and a glass of Strega liqueur for the evening.

Practical planning

Benevento sits northeast of Naples by rail (about an hour by regional train) and by the A16 motorway. The historic centre is walked easily on foot; parking sits at the edges. Museum and monument hours change with the season and some sites close Mondays or open only on guided slots, so consult beneventoturismo.it and the provincial museum network (retemuseale.provincia.benevento.it) before setting out. Sundays can be lively with free-entry initiatives at state sites. Spring and autumn offer the best walking weather; summer evenings justify a late dinner. Hotels cluster near the centre and remain reasonably priced.

Nearby places

The wines and cliff-top old town of Sant’Agata de’ Goti lie to the west, and the castle town of Montesarchio guards the valley toward Naples.
