Savigliano

Savigliano is a plain-town of arcaded squares and baroque palazzi between Turin and Cuneo, with two claims to fascination that no other Italian town can pair: one of the country’s great railway heritage collections, and a sensory museum devoted entirely to the art of scent, installed in the palace where a princess of Savoy once lived.

This is a working Piedmontese town that most travellers hurry through on the Turin–Cuneo line, which is precisely its charm: nothing here is staged for tourism, yet the historic centre holds a cathedral-square dignity of arcades, noble facades and towers. Two museums anchor a visit. The Piedmont Railway Museum tells the story of the locomotive works that once made the town, while MÚSES — the European Academy of Essences — turns perfume-making into an exhibition you experience with your nose. Add an elegant little opera house, medieval churches and some of the best-value eating in the province, and Savigliano makes a rewarding half-day or full-day stop for anyone travelling between the Langhe hills and the Alps.

Character and history

Savigliano grew up on the plain at the edge of the Monregalese hills, and its fortunes were always tied to movement: first the road and market, later the railway. A medieval commune contested by the neighbouring lords of Saluzzo and Montferrat, it passed decisively to the House of Savoy in the sixteenth century and still displays the Triumphal Arch raised for the dynastic marriage of Duke Charles Emmanuel I to Catherine Michelle of Spain. The town walls were demolished in 1707, opening the space for the broad squares that define the centre today.

From the nineteenth century Savigliano became an industrial town of foundries, silk mills and, above all, the Officine di Savigliano locomotive works, which later passed through Fiat Ferroviaria into the hands of Alstom. That engineering century gave the town its railway identity — and its habit of producing notable engineers, among them Santorre di Santarosa, the Risorgimento philhellene commemorated in the main square’s name, and the astronomers and scholars the town keeps claiming. Perfumery is the softer thread: a long local tradition of cultivating medicinal herbs and violets, distilled today inside the essence academy.

Begin on Piazza del Popolo, the arcaded heart of town, then walk to the medieval Civic Tower of Savigliano and the adjacent Piazza Santa Rosa. The Church of Santa Maria della Pieve is the town’s oldest place of worship, while the Church of San Pietro and the Archconfraternity of the Pietà, rebuilt in 1708 by the architect Giovanni Giacomo Plantery, carry the baroque thread. Noble families left their mark too: the Muratori Cravetta Palace and the frescoed Taffini d’Acceglio Palace, whose seventeenth-century rooms now host MÚSES, the European Academy of Essences, a techno-sensory museum of herbs, perfume and the flavours of Piedmont. The Milanollo Civic Theatre keeps the town’s operatic tradition alive. For the industrial story, the Piedmont Railway Museum Sommeiller-Grandis-Grattoni , a railway heritage museum in the former Ospizio dei Ferrovieri, keeps the memory of the locomotive works alive. The ideal rhythm is a morning in the centre, lunch in a trattoria under the arcades, then one of the two signature museums in the afternoon. At MÚSES, book ahead for the perfumer’s atelier, where visitors blend a personal fragrance — the museum’s violet-themed room honours the local flower. The Railway Museum’s opening arrangements vary, so confirm locally before visiting. The tourist information office near the centre can arrange guided visits of the palazzi.

Practical planning

Savigliano sits on the main Turin–Cuneo railway, about fifty minutes from Turin by regional train, and the historic centre is a flat, easy walk from the station. Motorway access from the Turin–Savona route is quick via the Savigliano exit.
