Few cities let you read twenty-eight centuries in a single day’s walk. In the morning you can stand inside the Colosseum’s tiers and cross the Roman Forum where the Republic did its business; by afternoon you may be beneath the coffered dome of the Pantheon or wandering the Aventine towards the vast Baths of Caracalla. Beyond the ancients lie papal Rome, the trasteverine lanes, museums of world rank, and a food culture that makes the simplest osteria lunch a destination in itself. Character and history

Rome began as a river settlement and grew into the capital of an empire, a papal state and a unified Italy, each layer reusing the last. The Pantheon tells the story in miniature: Agrippa’s original temple of all the gods was rebuilt under Hadrian in the early second century, and its consecration as Santa Maria ad Martyres in 609 saved the building from the looting that levelled so many ancient monuments; today it holds the tombs of Raphael and Italy’s first kings. The same palimpsest plays out across the historic centre, where medieval bell towers rise over imperial brick and Renaissance facades line streets first laid out in antiquity. Modern Rome is the capital’s ordinary life superimposed on all of it — ministries in palaces, markets in ancient squares, football in the Curva — and this coexistence, rather than any single monument, is what gives the city its unmistakable texture.

What to see

The essential core is the Flavian Amphitheatre (Colosseum) with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, administered together as the Colosseum Archaeological Park, a green heart of more than forty hectares that also takes in Nero’s Domus Aurea. The Pantheon (Basilica of St. Mary and the Martyrs) anchors the centro storico, its oculus and five rings of coffers untouched by time. To the south, the Baths of Caracalla show imperial leisure at monumental scale. Beyond these lie the Vatican quarter, the Capitoline museums, Bernini’s fountains and the parks of the Villa Borghese — far more than a single stay can hold, which is precisely the excuse to return.

How to experience

Pick one layer per day rather than sprinting through eras: ancient Rome in the morning when the Forum’s shade is long, papal and Baroque Rome in the afternoon, and the evening free for the passeggiata through the centre, where the monuments are floodlit and the crowds thin out. The Colosseum Park runs timed entry and a membership card covering the Palatine, Forum and Colosseum, worth considering for slow travellers. Rome’s tourist infrastructure is unusually deep — information points, an official tourist card, and a metro whose new Colosseo–Fori Imperiali station lands you at the amphitheatre’s door. Eat where the menu is short; drink the water from the nasoni fountains; and leave at least one day unplanned, because the city fills empty hours better than any itinerary.

Practical planning

Rome is served by two airports with fast rail links to the main stations; the historic centre is largely walkable, with metro, trams and buses filling the gaps and taxis readily available. Book timed entries for the Colosseum Park and the Vatican well ahead in high season, and note that state museums often offer free entry days that draw long queues. Spring and autumn bring the best walking weather; August is hot and half the city goes on holiday, while winter offers short lines and low light that flatters the travertine. Religious services can affect monument hours — the Pantheon’s among them — so verify on official sites the week you travel.
