Ascoli Piceno

Ascoli Piceno, the southern Marche’s capital, is a city of travertine: churches, towers and two of central Italy’s finest squares rise from the same honeyed local stone. Set where mountain torrents meet along salt-road routes, it layers Picene, Roman, medieval and Renaissance history into a centre you can cross on foot in twenty minutes — and eat brilliantly while doing it.

Why visit

Few Italian cities of this size pack so much into so little space. Two squares alone would justify the trip: Piazza del Popolo, a Renaissance living room of travertine arcades and cafés, and Piazza Arringo, the older civic and religious heart, ringed by the cathedral, a romanesque baptistery and the civic museums. Around them stand some fifty surviving medieval towers of the two hundred that once bristled over the rooftops, a Gothic Franciscan church, Roman bridges and a star-shaped fortress above the river. Add the city’s kitchen — fried stuffed olives all’ascolana were invented here — and an August jousting festival with Renaissance costumes, and Ascoli becomes an easy city to commit two or three days to. It also works as a base for the Adriatic shore and the Sibillini mountains, both within an easy drive.

Character and history

Ascoli began as an Italic Picene settlement — tradition makes it Sabine in origin — and fell to Rome in 268 BC, becoming a federate city tied to the capital by the Via Salaria, the ancient salt road that ends at the Adriatic. Its loyalty had limits: in 91 BC Asculum was the first Italian city to rise against Rome in the Social War, and after a siege resolved by the battle of 89 BC it was absorbed into the Roman state. The early medieval centuries brought Ostrogoth and Lombard devastation, then rule from the Duchy of Spoleto and a long ascendancy of its bishops. From 1189 the town ran itself as a free commune, before the familiar Marchigiano carousel of condottieri — the Malatesta, then Francesco Sforza — gave way to Papal States government that lasted until Italian unification in 1860. What survives is remarkably coherent, because virtually everything of consequence was rebuilt in local travertine, giving the centre its famous golden uniformity.

What to see

Begin at Piazza del Popolo, flanked by the Church of San Francesco, begun in 1258, and the Palazzo dei Capitani del Popolo, the former seat of civic power with an archaeological section inside. Walk up to Piazza Arringo, where the Ascoli Piceno Cathedral preserves a polyptych by Carlo Crivelli, the great local master of the 1400s; beside it the romanesque Baptistery of San Giovanni opens onto early Christian remains. The Civic Art Gallery of Ascoli Piceno in Palazzo dell’Arengo, founded in 1861 and filled with more than eight hundred works, shares the square with the Diocesan Museum of Ascoli Piceno.

Below the town, the Roman Theatre of Ascoli Piceno sits under the Annunziata hill, and the Ponte di Cecco spans the Castellano torrent beneath the ramparts of Forte Malatesta, a fortress the city’s own museums rank among Italy’s most spectacular Renaissance fortifications. Close the loop with the city’s quieter collections: the State Archaeological Museum, the Osvaldo Licini Contemporary Art Gallery, the Museum of Ceramic Art and the velvet-and-fresco Teatro Ventidio Basso.

How to experience

Take the city slowly, in the order Ascoli itself lives it: coffee standing at the bar in Piazza del Popolo in the morning, museums through the middle of the day, the passeggiata along Corso Mazzini — an open-air archaeological itinerary of Roman street levels — in the evening. Order olive all’ascolana with a glass of offida or Falerio wine, and look for anegino, the local anise liqueur. If your dates fall in early August, the Giostra della Quintana turns the city out in Renaissance dress, with a parade of more than a thousand costumed participants and a joust between six riders representing the historic contrade; confirm dates with the official tourism portal before planning around it. Practical planning

Ascoli Piceno has its own railway station on the Adriatic-side line towards San Benedetto del Tronto and is straightforwardly reached by road from the A14; the historic centre is compact and best explored entirely on foot, with car parks outside the walls. Most of the year the city is calm; August brings heat, crowds and the Quintana. The surrounding province invites slow loops. Renaissance hill towns Ripatransone and seaside Grottammare pair beautifully for a day towards the coast; Fermo, across the provincial line to the north, matches Ascoli’s squares with its own Roman cisterns; and the Sibillini Mountains open high walking country less than an hour inland.
