Imola

0 private tours·16 attractions

Imola pairs a Renaissance castle with one of the world’s great racetracks. The town where Caterina Sforza held court guards a compact historic centre on the Santerno river, while just outside the walls the Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit has carried Italian motorsport since the 1950s. History, engines and hillside parks make it far more than a pit stop.

Why visit

Imola earns its stop for two reasons that rarely share a postcode. The first is speed: the Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Circuit, threading through parkland beside the old town, is among the most technical and demanding layouts in racing, with corners — Piratella, Acque Minerali, Rivazza — that fans recite like poetry. Grand Prix racing returned here from 2020 with the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, and the circuit’s season now ranges from endurance racing to motorcycle championships and historic events. The second is the Renaissance: the Sforza Castle, rebuilt under Girolamo Riario and Caterina Sforza, still broods over the town that made the “Lady of Imola and Forlì” a legend. Between the two lies an unshowy historic centre — a cathedral begun in the 12th century, a house-museum of an aristocratic family, art collections in a convent, and green hills at its back — that most visitors drive past on the way to somewhere else, to their loss.

Character and history

Imola sits on the Via Emilia where the road crosses the Santerno river, at the threshold where Bologna’s province gives way to Romagna. Sulla founded it as Forum Cornelii around 82 BC, and ceramics, agriculture and its road position made it prosperous; the Lombards later gave it the name it keeps. The Middle Ages passed it between Byzantines, papal vicars and the Alidosi lords until the Sforza era: given as a dowry to Caterina Sforza on her marriage to Girolamo Riario, the town saw its lord murdered in 1488 and, in 1499, fell to Cesare Borgia — for whom Leonardo da Vinci drew one of his famously precise maps. Papal rule returned in 1504 and lasted, with Napoleonic interruptions, until Italian unification. The 20th century brought the city’s other destiny: a racing circuit laid out in the early 1950s on public roads through the parks, which rose to host the Italian Grand Prix in 1980 and its own San Marino Grand Prix from 1981 to 2006. The deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna in 1994 made Imola a place of mourning and then of reform; memorials on the circuit keep their memory, and the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix restored the town’s place at the top table of racing.

What to see

Motorsport first: the Enzo and Dino Ferrari International Circuit offers guided tours that pass the Senna memorials, and on race weekends the town hums; the adjacent Checco Costa Museum gathers the circuit’s racing history. Back in the centre, the Sforza Castle of Imola keeps a weapons and ceramics collection and the memory of Caterina Sforza, and in summer hosts open-air cinema — check the civic museums’ site before travelling, as parts of the monument are periodically closed for works. The San Domenico Museum – City Art Collections keeps the civic paintings in a former convent, alongside the Giuseppe Scarabelli Natural History and Archaeology Museum and the Domus del Rasoio (Roman house) with its mosaics. The Palazzo Tozzoni House Museum, an 18th-century aristocratic residence preserved with its furnishings, opens a window on the town’s patrician life. The Cathedral of San Cassiano Martire and the Diocesan Museum and Pinacoteca of Imola anchor the religious quarter, while the Basilica Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Piratello draws pilgrims on the road out of town. For air and shade, Acque Minerali Park and Tozzoni Park climb the gessose hills at the town’s edge, and the Bosco della Frattona Nature Reserve shelters old-growth woodland below them.

How to experience

Plan around your passion. Race fans should book circuit tours or event tickets in advance and explore the museum on non-race days, when paddock access is quietest; the calendar runs from spring endurance races to autumn classics. Everyone else can walk the centre in a morning — castle, cathedral, museums — and spend the afternoon in the parks, where trails link Acque Minerali to the ridge. The town’s food culture is Romagna at heart: piadina, cappelletti, and the wines of the surrounding hills, best sampled in the osterie around the cathedral. If you have a second day, the Via Emilia connects Imola with Faenza and its ceramics museums in fifteen minutes by train. Cyclists will find the hills above town — the same roads the circuit’s spirit stretches into — a rewarding climb.

Practical planning

Imola stands directly on the Bologna–Rimini railway, about thirty minutes from Bologna, and the station is a short walk from both the centre and, on the far side, the circuit entrance. The A14 motorway has an Imola exit. The historic core is compact and flat; the parks and reserves above it add proper walking. Opening days of the castle and civic museums change through the year, so check imolamusei.it and the circuit’s own site before travelling. Race weekends transform the town: book accommodation and parking months ahead for major events, or embrace the alternative — visiting in the quiet season, when the track is silent and the osterie are local again.

Nearby places

Bologna is the metropolitan anchor half an hour away. Marzabotto and Grizzana Morandi lie west in the Reno valley hills, with Etruscan ruins, memorial landscapes and the Rocchetta Mattei. Sant’Agata Bolognese to the north adds another chapter of Motor Valley.
