Asolo

Called by Carducci the city of a hundred horizons, Asolo crowns its hills with a fortress, a castle and a cathedral, ruled in memory by three women: Caterina Cornaro, exiled Queen of Cyprus; Eleonora Duse, the celebrated actress; and the travel writer Freya Stark. Walls, towers, frescoed churches and an underground Roman aqueduct reward the climb.

Why visit

Asolo earns its reputation without coast or canal: it is simply one of the most beautifully sited hill towns in Italy. The Rocca of Asolo on Monte Ricco looks from the Dolomites to Venice, and the town spreads below it in a weave of arcaded streets, towers and gardens. The civic museum system — a “museo diffuso” — ties the monuments together: the Civic Museum of Asolo with its archaeology and rooms devoted to Duse and Freya Stark, the Civic Tower of Asolo hosting exhibitions, and the Castle of Queen Caterina Cornaro whose great hall holds the Eleonora Duse Theatre. Art lovers find altarpieces by Lorenzo Lotto and Jacopo Bassano in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, and fresco cycles in the Church of Saint Catherine. Underground, the Casa Gotica and Roman Cistern (La Bot) opens the ancient waterworks beneath the town to guided caving visits. The plain of Treviso and the Prosecco Hills lie close enough for easy pairings, but many travellers find a full day in Asolo itself barely enough.

Character and history

The town’s layered past begins before Rome, but its historical fame rests on the fifteenth century, when the Venetian republic gave Asolo as a feudal grant to Caterina Cornaro, the deposed Queen of Cyprus, whose small court made the town a brief island of Renaissance splendour. Her castle keep survives as the Civic Tower, documented since the tenth century, and the castle complex still dominates the street that bears her name. In the sixteenth century the town’s learned circles produced the imagined conversations later published as “Gli Asolani”; in the nineteenth and twentieth it drew artists and writers — Eleonora Duse lived her final years in a house on the medieval walls and died there in 1924; Freya Stark settled in the hills above and wrote the town into English-language travel literature; Freya’s and Duse’s legacies now have dedicated rooms in the civic museum. Carducci’s epithet — the city of a hundred horizons — is quoted on the town’s own site, and from the Rocca’s bastions it reads as description rather than poetry. The churches preserve the town’s artistic depth: the cathedral’s documents reach back to a church of 969 on the site, with its present shape fixed by rebuildings after a roof collapse in 1606, an eighteenth-century interior reorganisation, and an 1889 facade. Through it all Asolo has kept its aristocratic, slightly reticent air — a town of villas and gardens rather than crowds.

What to see

The Rocca of Asolo crowns Monte Ricco at about 310 metres; after restoration and the spectacular helicopter installation of its new access stairway, it is open on weekends with wide hours in summer.

The Castle of Queen Caterina Cornaro anchors the historic centre; within its great salone, the Eleonora Duse Theatre keeps the actress’s memory alive in a functioning historic playhouse.

How to experience

Climb to the Rocca first, ideally in the morning light, to fix the geography — the sweep from the Prealps to the Venetian lagoon is the town’s defining experience. Then descend into the museum system and buy the combined ticket, which covers the civic museum, tower and Rocca; the museum keeps a seasonal calendar, heaviest from April to October, so verify opening days before planning. Book ahead for the La Bot underground route, which runs only with guides and caving equipment. Walk Via Browning and the walls between the Duse house and the castle, reading the memorial tablets as you go, and end at Sant’Anna cemetery, where Duse’s grave and Freya Stark’s lie close together in the cypress shade. Art-focused visitors should give the cathedral’s Lotto altarpiece a long look at off-peak hours. Pair the day with tastings on the nearby Prosecco Hills or dinner in one of the town’s quiet restaurant gardens. In summer the Duse theatre and museum run animated visits and themed itineraries — worth reserving, as they frequently sell to small groups.

Practical planning

Asolo sits in the Province of Treviso, about an hour from Venice by car and under an hour from Treviso airport; public transport from Treviso exists but is slow, so most visitors drive, parking outside the walls at the signed lots below the centre. The town is steep — the climb to the Rocca and to San Gottardo involves sustained stairs — and the Rocca’s access stairway is exposed, so avoid it in storms. Individual sites keep different schedules: the museum operates seasonally with reduced winter days, the Rocca opens weekends, and the underground tour is by appointment only; none should be assumed open daily. Summer weekends bring day-trippers from the plain; late afternoon and Sunday mornings are calmer. Accommodation concentrates in historic palazzi and hillside villas and books early for the autumn fair season. Combine with Conegliano, Valdobbiadene and the Prosecco Hills route for a two- or three-day hill-town itinerary.
