Mandello del Lario

Beneath the Grigna massif on Lake Como’s Lecco branch, Mandello del Lario mixes two Italy’s: medieval lakeside borgos with fortified towers, and the factory town where Moto Guzzi has built motorcycles since 1921. Motors, mountains and water give the town a character no other shore stop shares, crowned each September by the great international gathering of Guzzi riders.

Why visit

Mandello appeals to two kinds of travellers who rarely overlap — and here they share the same piazza. Pilgrims of motorcycling come for the Moto Guzzi works, whose museum gathers a century of Italian engineering inside the original 1920s factory; walkers and lake lovers come for the borgo of Riva Grigna, the cliff-flanked hamlets above, and the shore paths where the Lecco branch stays calm and blue beneath the mountain wall. The town itself sums up the mix in its own slogan — emotions between peaks, lake and engines — and the official tourism portal presents it as the “città dei motori e della Moto Guzzi”, a lively industrial hub of the twentieth century with a medieval heart.

Add practical virtues: a station on the Lecco–Colico line, a lakeside promenade, and easy access to the Grigne high country via the Piani Resinelli plateau above town.

Character and history

The medieval story survives in stone. Along the shore stands the borgo of Riva Grigna with its Pretoria tower; up the hill, the borgo of Maggiana keeps the tower popularly linked with Barbarossa’s passing; and other fortified houses of the old defensive system punctuate the town, from the Torre dei Lafranconi to the arcades of the lakefront, where the arcipretale church of San Lorenzo joined a Romanesque bell tower — rebuilt in the early seventeenth century — to the medieval skyline. These towers watched the road along the lake and the landing places on which the villages’ fishing and trade depended.

The twentieth century transformed the town. In 1921 three young men, led by the designer Carlo Guzzi, founded a motorcycle company on the shores of the lake; Moto Guzzi grew into one of Italy’s great engineering names — its racers set records and won championships — and made Mandello a byword among riders across Europe. The factory still operates, the museum at its gates tells the story model by model, and the annual international rally fills the lakeside with thousands of motorcycles and their riders, an appointment the municipality promotes as one of the town’s signature events. The monumental cemetery, with its sculptured tombs of local families and industrialists, records the prosperity that followed.

What to see

The essential stop is the Moto Guzzi Museum, inside the historic works on Via Parodi, where production motorcycles, racers and prototypes trace the marque from Carlo Guzzi’s earliest machines to the classics of the postwar years; visits follow the schedule published on the company site. In the old quarters, see the Church of San Lorenzo by the lake, the medieval Torre Pretoria in the borgo of Riva Grigna, the Tower called del Barbarossa at Maggiana, and the Torre dei Lafranconi of the old defensive network. The hillside adds sacred stops: the Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine del Fiume near the water, the Church of San Giorgio on the slope above the lake, the Church of the Madonna di Debbio in its hamlet, and the sculptural Monumental Cemetery of Mandello del Lario.

How to experience

Split your time by altitude. A morning belongs to the factory and museum — book ahead, and if your dates fall in September, time the visit against the international rally, when the whole lakefront becomes a festival of the marque. The afternoon goes to the borgos: Riva Grigna’s lanes and towers, then the climb or drive to the hill churches for views over the branch of the lake. Serious walkers should allow a further day for the Piani Resinelli plateau, the traditional gateway to the Grigne, where pastures and via ferrata routes begin. On the water, the shore path and small beaches suit easy days; kayaks and boats can be found along the branch. Practical planning

Mandello is about half an hour by train from Lecco and sits on the lakeside road; drivers should note that the factory area and lakeside fill quickly during the September rally. The museum’s visiting days are limited and seasonal — always confirm on the official Moto Guzzi pages before travelling. Spring and autumn are the best all-round seasons; summer offers lake swimming and cool evenings under the Grigna, while the mountain plateau above town is a refreshing escape on hot days.
